Course Description:
Complex analysis is one of the most beautiful areas of pure mathematics, at the same time it is an
important and powerful tool in the physical sciences and engineering. This course provides an
introduction to complex analysis which is the theory of complex functions of a complex variable. We will
start by introducing the complex plane, along with the algebra and geometry of complex numbers, and
then we will make our way via differentiation, integration, complex dynamics, power series
representation and Laurent series , complex mappings.
Course Objectives:
acquaint the students with the basic concepts of rigorous proof in complex analysis
increase the mathematical maturity of the students and make them work
comfortably with concepts that initially seemed mysterious
harness the challenge and excitement of learning complex analysis and complex mathematics
appreciate how abstract ideas and rigorous methods in mathematical analysis can be applied to
important practical problems in physical sciences, engineering, computer science and
economics.
Apply the methods of complex analysis to evaluate definite integrals and infinite series.

Quizzes:
Frequent short quizzes will be given at the middle and end of hourly classes . The objective of these
will be to encourage students to come prepared. Quizzes will generally be based on previous lectures
materials and reading and homework assignments.
Frequent assignments will be given, typically once a week. Negative marks will be given for late
submissions. Although students are expected to solve the problems on their own, group work and peer
learning is encouraged. Students will be expected to form small groups with an assigned group leader
who will be encouraged to ensure all members of the group are kept up to speed on the course.
LMS:
Students will be required to regularly use the LMS for all course updates.
