Make a Quilt square

A. Set up global preferences:

1. Select ​File ​in the top menu bar, and select ​Preferences​ from the drop down menu​. ​The
global preferences dialog should appear.

2. Select ​Configuration​ in the left hand menu. In Default Unit, select “​Inches​”. Click Apply.

3. Select ​Pattern​ in the left hand menu. In ​Seam Allowance, Default value​, enter ​0.625
inch.​ Click Apply.

4. Select Paths in the left hand menu. Confirm that your ​My Patterns​ directory is
<your-home-directory>/seamly2d/patterns, ​or enter the directory where you will store your
patterns. Click ​OK ​to exit the preferences dialog​.

B. Draft your pattern

1. Create a new pattern file ​quilt_square.val​, new pattern piece ​QuiltSquare​, and first point
A​:
a.) Select ​File/New. ​ Name pattern piece as ​QuiltSquare.​ The point ​A ​will be
automatically created.
b.) Select ​File/Save​. Enter ​quilt_square.val​ as the file name. This will be saved into
your ​seamly2d/patterns​ directory.

2. Create the ​A1​ point and first line:


a.) Under the Point tab in the left hand menu, select the Point at distance and
angle​ tool.
b.) Select point ​A​. Drag the mouse a small distance which creates a temporary red
line, then click. Enter these values into the dialog box:
Length ​10
Angle ​0
Label ​A1
c.) Click ​OK​.
d.) Click on Zoom Best Fit

3. Create point ​A2​ and line:


a.) Select ​Point at distance and angle tool.
b.) Select point ​A1.​ Drag the mouse a small distance which creates a temporary red
line, then click. Enter these values into the dialog box:
Length ​6
Angle ​90
Label ​A2

c.) Click ​OK


d) Click on Zoom Best Bit icon in the top menu bar.

4. Create point ​A3​ and line:


a.) Use ​Point at distance and angle​ tool.
b.) Select point ​A2​. Length = ​6​, Angle = ​180​. Label ​A3​.
c.) Click​ OK
d.) Click ​Zoom Best fit
5. Create line between A2 and A3.
a.) Select the Line tab in the left hand menu.
b.) Select the ​Line​ tool.
c.) Select ​A​ as the first point of the line, select ​A3 ​as the second
point. This draws a line between ​A​ and ​A3​.

6. Split the square into two triangles by drawing a diagonal line between ​A3​ and ​A1:
a.) Select the ​Line​ tool.
b.) Select point ​A3​ then click and drag the red line to ​A1​.

7. Split one triangle into two smaller triangles:


a.) Select the ​MidPoint ​tool. Click ​A3​ then click ​A1​ and name the point
A4.
b.) Select the ​Line​ tool. Click ​A4​ then click ​A​.
c.) Save your fille with ​File/Save.

8. Create passmark points.


a.) Create point ​A5​ as a midpoint between ​A3​ and ​A4.​ See step 7a.
b.) Create point ​A6​ as a midpoint between ​A4​ and ​A1​.
c.) Create point ​A7​ as a midpoint between ​A4​ and ​A​.

9. Define the seamline for each triangle, including the passmark points.
a.) Draw the seamline for the largest triangle with points A3, A2, and
A1:

i.) Select the ​Detail tab​ in the left menu.


ii.) Select the ​Workpiece​ tool.
iii.) Draw the outline around the largest triangle in a ​clockwise
direction, and include the notch points. Start by selecting
point ​A3​, then​ A2​, ​A1, A6, A4, ​and​ A5​. ​Don’t click A3 again!
Click ​Enter​.
iv.) The ​Workpiece​ tool dialog box appears which lists​ A3,
A2, A1, A6, A4, A7​ as points along the main path for the
workpiece. Click ​OK​.
b.) Create the workpiece for the small triangle with points ​A3​, ​A5​, ​A4​, ​A7​ and ​A​. ​See
step 9a​.
c.) Create the workpiece for the small triangle with points ​A4​, ​A6​, ​A1​, ​A, and A7​. ​See
Step 9a​.
C. Create pattern pieces

1. Enter ​Detail​ mode.


a. Select the ​Details​ icon on the top menu bar.

2. Separate the workpieces to make space for the seam allowances.


a. Click in the middle of the large triangle workpiece then drag it to the right.
b. Click in the middle of the small triangle workpiece with ​A3, A4, ​and ​A​. Drag it to
the left.

3. Define seam allowances and passmarks for the large triangle.


a. Create the seam allowance width:
i. RIght-click in the middle of the large triangle workpiece.
ii. Select ​Options
iii. Select ​Seam Allowance​ tab.
iv. Check the ​Seam Allowance​ box.
v. Enter ​0.625​ inch as the seam allowance width​. (⅝” = 0.625)
vi. Click ​Apply
b. Create the passmarks
i. Select the ​Main Path​ tab
ii. Right-click on ​A5​, and check the ​Passmark​ box.
iii. Right-click on ​A6​, and check the ​Passmark​ box.
iv. Click on the ​Passmarks​ icon in the left menu

v. Select ​A5​ in the picklist


vi. Click on the radio button for ​One Line
vii. Set A6 to have ​Two Lines​.
viii. Click ​OK

4. Repeat step 3 for the two small triangles. Set ​A5​ to have one line, ​A6​ to have two lines,
and ​A7​ to have three lines. remember to save your file!

D. Print your pattern

1. Create the layout image:


a. Select the Layout icon in the menu bar menu to open the Layout dialog.

b. Select correct printer in the printer picklist


c. Select ​Letter​ paper
d. Check the ​Ignore Margins​ box
e. Click ​OK
2. Print your layout.
a. Select ​File/Layout/ Print Preview
b. Click on the multipage icon in the dialog menu bar to display all sheets.

c. The image should display:


d. Click on the printer icon in the menu bar to print!
