Why should we prevent FALLS?
Otago Home Exercise Program

• The programme was designed


specifically to prevent falls.
• It consists of a set of leg muscle
strengthening and balance retraining
exercises progressing in difficulty,
and a walking plan.
• The exercises take about 30 minutes
to complete.
• Participants are expected to exercise
three times a week and go for a walk
at least twice a week.

SAFETY
• Never exercise holding on to an
object which may move.
• Use the side of something stable
like a bench or a solid table.

• Stop Exercise and contact the


doctor if there is;
 Dizziness
 Chest pain
 Shortness of breath (patient is
unable to speak because of
shortness of breath)

Strengthening Exercises

• Done for 8-10 repetitions

• Use ankle weights of 1-2 kgs.

• Remember to do the movement slowly Ankle Weights

• Allow 1-2 minutes of rest in between

• Should not make elderly unduly tired

Balance Exercises
• Balance exercises should be done from holding on a stable structure
to performing the exercise without support.

• Person’s eye should stay looking ahead.

• In case of pain - exercise only on pain-free range.

• Maintain normal breathing and do not hold breath while doing the
exercise.
