The document discusses the li blood group system which was discovered in 1956 and comprises two antigens called I and i. At birth, the i antigen is predominantly expressed on red blood cells while I antigen expression is low, but between birth and 8 months of age I antigen expression increases at the expense of i antigen expression. In adults, there is strong expression of I antigen and little expression of i antigen, except in rare cases where only i antigen is expressed. Antibodies against the I antigen are mostly autoantibodies but in rare cases where individuals lack the I antigen, anti-I occurs as an alloantibody. High titers of autoantibody anti-I can cause autoimmune hemolytic anemia.
