ASSIGNMENT – II

1.A reversible engine is supplied with from two constant temperature sources at 900K and
600K and rejects heat to a constant temperature sink at 300K.If the engine executes a
numbers of complete cycles while developing 100KW, and rejecting 3600KJ of heat per
minute. Determine the heat supplied by each source per minute and efficiency of the engine.

2. A reversible heat pump is used to maintain a temperature of 0oc in a refrigerator when it

rejects the rejects the heat to the surroundings at 27oc. If the heat removal rate from the
refrigerator is 1500 kJ/min. Determine the COP of the machine and work input required. If
the required input to run the pump is developed by a reversible engine which receives heat at
400oc and rejects to atmosphere, then determine the overall COP of the system.

3. State and prove Carnot theorem.

4. Derive an expression for the change in entropy of a perfect gas during polytropic process
in terms of T1 and T2.

5. 2 kg of water at 90oc is mixed with 3 kg of water at 10oc in an isolated system. Calculate

the change of entropy due to the mixing process.(8) 2012

6. State prove Clausius in equality.

7. A carnot heat engine takes heat from an infinite reservoir at 5500c and rejects it to a sink at
275oc. Half of the work delivers by the engine is used to run generator and the other half is
used to run heat pump which takes heat at 275oc and rejects it at 440oc. Express the heat
rejected at 440oc by the heat pump as % of heat supplied to the engine 550oc. If the operation
of the generator is 500 kw, find the heat rejected per hour by the heat pump at 440oc.

8. The reversible heat engine A and B arranged the series. A rejecting heat directly to B
engine receive roots at temperature of 42oc from hot substance. While engine B is
communicate with cold sink temperature of 44oc work. Find intermediate, efficiency and heat
reject.

9. List out and explain various causes of irreversibility?

10. A heat engine operating between two reservoirs at 1000 k and 300 kg is used to drive heat
pump which exacts heat from the reservoir at a rate twice that at maximum possible and thr
coefficient of performance of the heat pump is 50 % of the maximum possible, make
calculations for the temperature of the reservoir to rejects heat. Also work out the rate of heat
rejection from the heat pump if the rate of supply of heat to the engine is 50 kw.

11. Deduce the expression for the entropy change in terms of pressure and the temperature.

12. A reversible heat engine operates between two reservoirs at temperatures 600oc and 40oc.
The engine drives a reversible refrigerator which operates between reservoirs at temperatures
of 40oc and -20oc. The heat transfer to the heat engine is 2000 kJ and network output of the
combined engine refrigerator plant is 360 kJ.
(1) Evaluate the heat transfer to the refrigerant and the net heat transfer to the reservoir at
40oc. (2)Reconsider when the efficiency of the heat engine and COP of the refrigerator are
each 40% of their maximum possible values.

13. Derive an expression for the change in entropy of a percfect gas during polytropic and
constant pressure processes.

14. one kg of ice at – 5oc is exposed to the atmosphere which is at 20oc. The ice melts and
comes into equilibrium with the atmosphere (i) Determine the entropy increase of the turbine.
(ii) What is the minimum amount of work necessary to convert the water back to ice
at – 5oc? assume Cp for ice as 2.093 kj/kg K and the latent heat of fusion of ice
as 333.33kJ/kg

15. A closed system consists of 1kg of air which is initially at 1.5 bar and 67 oc. The volume
doubles the system undergoes a process to the law pV 1.2 =C. Find the work done, heat
transfer and change in entropy.

16. Ten grammes of water at 20oc is converted into ice at -10oc at constant atmospheric
pressure. Assuming the specific heat of liquid water to remain constant at 4.2 J/kg K and that
of ice to be half of this value and taking the latent heat of fusion of ice at 0oc as 335 J/g,
calculate the entropy change of the system.
