Установите соответствие между заголовками 1–8 и текстами A–G.
Запишите свои ответы в таблицу. Используйте каждую цифру только один
раз. В задании есть один лишний заголовок.

1. Musical performance
2. Attractive landscape
3. Perfect holidays
4. Portrait of a girl
5. Film for all ages
6. Exciting hobby
7. Colourful festival
8. Interesting book

A. This is a full-length (ninety minutes) cartoon, which is entertaining for both

adults and children over six. The animation and colour are of very high quality
and the story has lots of fun and excitement. The plot is quick moving and full of
surprises. There’s romance, action, comedy, music and lots of fantastic songs and
dances.

B. This is a full-blooded magnificently written portrait of history’s most

fascinating woman. Readers will lose themselves for hours in this richly
entertaining novel full of dramatic twists and turns. From the spectacular era that
bears her name comes the spellbinding story of Elizabeth I — her tragic
childhood, her confrontation with Mary, Queen of Scots and her brilliant reign.

C. The young woman is shown in a “shepherdess” hat and white dress, recalling a
classical chiton. The background landscape, common in such paintings, seems to
indicate the heroine’s closeness to nature, to the ordinary joys of life. The
painter’s colour range — at times as translucent as porcelain, at others muted like
mother -of- pearl — is based upon subtle plays of gray and green, light blue and
pink.

D. In this picture one is struck by the artist’s absolute mastery in portraying

natural details, whether the dry, sandy soil of the forest, the clear stream of water
in the foreground, the yellow bark and fluffy needles of the pines, or the sense of
a bright, clear, calm summer day. The artist managed to create an image familiar
to anyone who has seen a Russian forest.

E. Have a good time on the most lively and exciting island in the Caribbean.
Relax under a palm tree on the white sandy beaches. Swim in the clear, blue sea.
Listen to the bands playing Calypso music. Or get really adventurous and go
scuba diving for sunken treasure on the sea bed. Join in the many cultural
celebrations we offer, for example the sugar harvest festival.

F. This event is considered the greatest attraction for visitors to the Isle of Man.
No definite date can be given, but it is normally held between 5th and 15th July.
The Pageant begins at about 8 p.m. First we are given a glimpse of village life in
Celtic times. Then suddenly Viking long ships appear and then there are scenes
of war. Then Celts and Vikings unite, and the Manx nation is born. The actual
Pageant is followed by a grand torchlight procession and firework display.

G. Do you like Latin American dancing? Do you want to dance like you see in
the films and on the stage? Do you want to feel the rhythm of the music in your
body and in your soul? Do you want to meet other people who have a love for the
same music as you? If you have answered “Yes” to any of these questions, join
our Latin dance classes on Thursday night between seven and ten. All are
welcome.

The Survival of the Welsh Language

Wales is a small country of just over 3 million people, on the north west
seaboard of Europe. Despite many historical incursions of other peoples,
particularly the English, it has preserved its ancient Celtic language,
A___________________________. Welsh is habitually spoken by about 10% of
the people, half understood by a further 10%, and not spoken at all by the
majority in this ‘bilingual’ society.
Up to the First World War most people were Welsh speaking, especially in
the mountains of North Wales. The English-speaking areas were along the more
fertile coastal plains. On the whole there was an easy tolerance of the two
languages, B___________________________.
By 1919 there was a considerable drop in Welsh speakers. This was due to
the large flows of capital investment from England into the South Wales
coalfield, C___________________________.
Now, D___________________________, commerce and everyday business
were carried out in English.
In the rural mountain areas 80% to 85% of the population were Welsh
speakers, E ___________________________. However, in the coalfield country
of Glamorgan 70% spoke English only, and in its neighbour border county the
figure was over 90%.
By 1931 the number of people able to speak Welsh in the whole of Wales
had fallen to 37% of the population, F ___________________________. It
continued to drop and reached its lowest – 18.6% — in the 1990s. But by the start
of the 21st century, numbers had begun to increase again and reached 21.7% in
2004!

1. as well as education and the law

2. the only one of a number of allied languages that remain
3. with radio and the English press further speeding the decline
4. many being able to speak Welsh only
5. where Welsh was studied as language and literature in an academic manner
6. apart from the fact that Welsh was not permitted to be used at all in the
schools
7. bringing a flood of immigrant labour from all over Britain

Because of the father’s job the boy had to

1) visit UK air bases.

2) change home three times a year..
3) often change schools
4) behave as a dreamer.

Lucky Break

For the first ten years of my life my father was in the RAF (Royal Air Force).
This meant that he was frequently posted to different air bases around the UK and
I, as frequently, changed schools. One year we moved no fewer than three times
and each time I tried, in vain, to settle and make friends. For a young child this
frequency of change can only have a detrimental effect and I still have school
reports stating that I was “lazy” and a “dreamer”.

When I reached ten, my worried parents decided I needed a personal tutor.

She turned out to be a kindly and patient old lady who presented me with a large,
black book of tests. She made me complete it as a home task and I scored about
20 out of 100. At out next meeting, on a Saturday morning, she went through it
with me item by item, until I completely understood each task. She then made me
retake the test and of course I got almost every question correct. Then we again
moved house!

In our new town I took and failed the 11 plus exam (my excuse was that I
was still only ten!) and my prospects looked dim. I was destined to go to the local
comprehensive which had a reputation for being quite rough. But also nearby was
an ancient public school, set in a castle. This was a place for rich kids only —
apart from every year they gave 2 free places to the highest performing local boys
(it was a boys only school) in their entrance exam.

My crazy parents decided I should enter the exam. I had as much chance of
succeeding as going to the moon — or so I thought. But when I sat down to take
the test, a rather familiar black book of 100 tests was placed on the desk!

I did the test and kept quiet and the next term, as a terror struck 11 year old in
an ill fitting suit, I arrived for my first day at “the castle”.

Clearly I was going to have problems in this new, intensely academic

environment and I did. There were 31 boys in my class and in every subject,
despite my best efforts, I finished in the bottom 5 in every test, exam and report.

We were then streamed into “sets” for each subject and I ended up being
taught with boys closer to my own ability. I worked really hard and at the end of
my third year there, I won my first form prize. I was top of the bottom class! But
I was really motivated and in time got “promoted” to higher “sets”. I worked
really hard and won prizes every year until I left after A Levels. My grades were
all A’s — the highest you can get - and I was offered a place to study at a
prestigious university.

So when a certain old Lady presented me with a large black book full of
tests, you could say it was my lucky break. Although I would argue that if you
work really hard and keep your wits about you — then you begin to make your
own luck.

Yasnaya Polyana is the country estate where the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy lived, wrote and spent
most of his long life. He was born here in 1828 and he was buried here in 1910. It was in Yasnaya Polyana that
Tolstoy wrote many of his great novels. Many of Tolstoy's famous contemporaries visited him in Yasnaya
Polyana. Writers, composers, painters, political leaders – eminent figures from the arts, social thought, politics
and also workers, peasants and students came to see him.
Life on the estate and the beauty of the countryside are reflected in many of his writings. Constant contact
with the local peasants was a source of Tolstoy's knowledge of the life of common people. His own life as a
thinker and a writer inspires people all over the world with a desire for truth, goodness and justice. In his
writings, Leo Tolstoy gave the world a unique picture of Russian life.
