Roget again accused the company’s board and Gov-
ernment of contempt of court, as he pointed out that
workers began receiving termination letters while the
decision was pending.
“The company is moving like a rogue elephant with
absolutely no regard for justice, fair-play or the law...
If the judgement is reserved, the Minister of Labour
should be the first one to come out and say ‘listen the
company ought to hold its hands’, whether state or
otherwise,” Roget said.
He also suggested that the company should have
maintained its operations while the matter is being de-
termined by the court. The matter is expected to go on
trial on October 30, with the court already indicating
it will take two to three days to deliver a judgement.
“They might as very well have utilised the workers
to keep the operations going where the company and
country would benefit. It makes no sense,” Roget said.
He maintained the union had put forward propos-
als which showed the company could be returned to
financial profitability without closing.
“We have always been confident that the company
can be saved. We have a proposal that would take care
of the US$850 million bullet payment and the US$250
million outstanding payment and all outstanding
debts.
“In addition, the proposal addresses the issue of
