Teaching Philosophy

This is one of the most relevant science classes you will ever take. Aldo Leopold and I share the
view that, "A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic
community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise." We live in a world that is connected to every
single decision we make. My goal will be to help you understand how this relationship works and
why we should take this role seriously.

Course Description

This course will, “provide students with the scientific principles, concepts and methodologies
required to understand the interrelationships of the natural world, to identify and analyze
environmental problems both natural and human-made, to evaluate the relative risks associated
with these problems and to examine alternative solutions for resolving and/or preventing them.”
Essentially, you will learn to be a professional observer using science as a tool to satisfy your
curiosity.

Required Materials

Stick Notes (no bright colors) Three-Ring Spiral Bound Notebook

Three-Ring Binder (2 inch) Three Ring Divider Tabs (10)

During the first week of school you will also be checking out a textbook that will need to be
covered by a paper bag. Making a pocket for your sticky notes may be very useful.
Student Expectations

Students are expected to be kind, honest, respectful, attentive, and patient. I want you to have fun
and contribute to making this class a safe and enjoyable place, so no swearing or bullying. Be
classy, ladies and gents!

All students will be expected to attend class daily and come prepared to learn. Each student will
be expected to act in a manner that promotes a positive learning environment.

Grading Procedures

Total class percentage will equate to the following letter grade:

A = 94-100% B+ = 84-87.9% C+ = 77-79.9% D+ = 67-69.9% F < 59.9%
A- = 88-93.9% B = 84-86% C = 74-76.9% D = 64-66.9%
B- = 80-83.9% C- = 70-73.9% D- = 60-63.9%

Attendance

Missing work will not be given or accepted for unexcused absences. With teacher permission,
students will have 3 school days after the due date to turn in missing assignments from excused
absences.

Tardies

Students absent from the classroom for the first 15 minutes of the class will be considered tardy.
After which, students will be marked absent. Students who leave the classroom for more than the
allotted time will be marked tardy or absent accordingly. This is a safety issue.

Cheating

Students who plagiarize their work claiming it as their own will receive a zero for the assignment
or test. This cannot be made up and will be discussed with parents. Following this, the student will
need to perform community service in my classroom before continuing to turn in other
assignments.

Electronic Devices

Just don’t. I get it, you’re bored and you have an addiction to the computer in your
pocket. But your boss won’t stand for it and neither will I. So let’s practice good
habits and if you have an emergency, talk to me before!
