Chapter 1
Introduction
Parents want at least good quality of education for their children. For them, to have good
education serves as precursor to a better future; thus, choosing a good school is important to ensure
that the latter would happen. In choosing a school, there are some considerations that parents put
into account. According to researcher, “Reasons of Grade 11 Senior High School Students in
Enrolling at MVGFCI,” the factors that influence parents’ choices of educational institution for their
children in private schools are the following: satisfaction level with teacher, parent and student
relationships and positive learning environment within the private school setting.
On the other hand, parents also confer with their children before finally choosing a school for
them because their children also have consider some factors in choosing the school they want to
enroll. Students have their own demands on school such as school facilities, high quality of teacher,
and voucher. After this, the parents and children will choose the best school to enroll in.
This research seeks reasons of the students in enrolling at MVGFCI. This will benefit the
following: students, Department of Education, faculty staff, teachers, students, parents and future
researchers.
This descriptive-survey research shall gather data using the questionnaire-checklist and will
be conducted at Manuel V. Gallego Foundation Colleges, Inc. (MVGFI). The researchers shall be

Research Objectives
3. Determine the reasons of grade 10 students in choosing the school to enroll in.
Research Assumptions
1. Most of the respondents are male with the age of 15-16 belonging to grade 10.
2. Most of the grade 10 student prefer to enroll at Araullo University and Our Lady of Fatima
3. Most of the reasons of the respondents consider their financial condition and parents
This study entitled “A Survey on the School Preference and Reasons of Grade 10 Students
S.Y. 2018-2019” shall be conducted at MVGFC during the School Year 2018-2019. The respondents
shall be all the grade 10 students. The data shall be gathered through questionnaires.

Conceptual Framework
Education is fundamental for economic growth and for the being of a population and therefore
it is in the interest of every country to develop better understanding of which factors are key players
in the nation’s educational market, If there exists one. In Malta parents do not have a choice whether
or not to send their children to school if they are of compulsory schooling age, however they can
exploit their right of choice when it comes to the type of school which their children attend. This study
school for their pertain to parents to choose this type of school. Quantitative research methods wre
employed to gather and analyse the data. The study provides empirical evidence that reasons related
to academics, safety and value community are deemed to be of the utmost importance for parents
who choose independent schools. Contrarily reasons related to convenience specifically preschool
enrolment and before and after school childcare are perceived to be the least important. Moreover
parents who sent their children to independent schools perceive the overall quality of state schools
to be fair. In addition results indicate that these parents are every satisfied with the current school
choice and those who sent their children to a different school before enrolling in the current one
reported that they were satisfied with the overall quality of the previous school. Results also show
that these parents have common socio-economic and are very satisfied with the current school
choice and those who sent their children to a different school before enrolling in the current one
reported that they were satisfied with the overall quality of the previous school. Results also show
that these parents have common socio-economic and demographic characteristic especially withy
regards to the level of education household income, household situation and employment. These
results are discussed in relation to the literature reviewed whereby consistency with international
attempt to present a case for the importance of having an education system that promotes social

Foreign Literature
According to the article of International Students entitled “Factors to Consider when Choosing
a School” choosing a school is a big decision, and can easily become overwhelming. There are many
factors and variables that need to be considered when making the decision. First, cost is an important
factor to consider when choosing a school. Ask yourself if you can afford tuition if you are accepted
into a particular school. Remember to factor in the financial aid the school is likely to offer you, and
to find and apply for as many scholarships as possible. Second, when looking at schools, ask yourself
whether you'd rather be in a rural, suburban, or urban location. How far is the school from where you
would live, and does that matter to you? Does the town require you to invest in a car or will you be
able to use public transportation to access the town in which you live in. Third, some schools are
more selective than others. You may want to research the acceptance rates of colleges you're
considering before applying. More well-known colleges are generally more selective. Consider your
chances of being accepted into a well-known “name school,” and ask yourself whether you would be
happier at a lesser-known school. Although a degree from certain colleges has a lot of weight behind
it, in the end what really matters is the quality of the education you receive and the experiences you
have. Fourth, if you are travelling from another country for school, you may want to look into any
international student programs and services provided by a school. Does this school provide a variety
14
of programs, services and activities to help with the cultural transition? Your school should have your
best interests at heart; make sure that any school you’re considering is committed to taking care of
your needs. Fifth, when choosing a school, you want to know that you will be receiving a top-quality
education, and that you will have many options available to you. Even if you’re not sure at the moment
whether graduate school is in your future or not, you may want to research the acceptance rate of
graduates. Knowing that you will have options after graduation will help lend you peace of mind.
Last, safety is one of the most important factors to consider. Over the past few years, crime has been
increasing, even on highschool campuses. When considering a high school, look into its crime
statistics and find out what steps the school is taking to ensure the safety of its students.

Local Literature
Some parents would send their kids to schools as far as the opposite end of where they live.
Living near to a school is a smart decision for both parents and children. According to “Des Arellano
2015” there are factors that influence the parents to enroll their children in near to school. Here are
the reasons, Parents can be assured that their children are in a secure and closely monitored
environment. Living close to your children’s school also gives you more opportunities to meet and
talk to their friends and classmates. It’s very reassuring to know that they’re keeping the right
company. Lastly, it encourages them to lead an active lifestyle because being able to access the
school’s sports facilities even on weekends gives them more reasons to exercise, boost their

Foreign Study
Based on “What Parents Want: School Preferences and School Choice by Simon
Burgess, Ellen Greaves, Anna Vignoles and Deborah Wilson” they showed parents' preferences for
school attributes in a unique data set of survey, administrative, census and spatial data. Strong
parental demand for academic performance is a key element in the view that
strengthening school choice will drive up school performance. Since school choice is a widely
endorsed school improvement policy, this assumption is an important policy issue too, and the
academic and policy debates on “school choice” are both controversial and unresolved. In this paper,
the researcher contribute to this debate by offering new evidence on the nature and
and heterogeneity of school preferences. The researcher address two key questions. First, what
characteristics are families actually looking for in a school? Is the school’s academic attainment
record important, or do other factors out-weigh it? Second, do preferences differ between families in
important ways, for example by socio-economic status? The former question is important for the idea
that strengthening choice will raise standards. The latter question is potentially part of the answer to
an important fact about schooling in England. In England, children from poor families are much more
Their results show that the three main factors that families care about are academic
attainment, school socio-economic composition and travel distance. The researcher estimate
16
average trade offs between these to be as follows: for a school that is about 400m further away
families would on average need an increase of 11 percentage points in the academic attainment
measure to be indifferent, about 1 standard deviation. Similarly, again for a school about 400m further
away, families would indifferent to nominating that school if its fraction of poor students was 7
percentage points lower, about half a standard deviation. The researcher can also compute the
preference trade-off directly between academic attainment and school composition. A 1 percentage
point increase in the proportion of poor students at a school is off-set by a 1.722 percentage point
increase in the attainment measure. So a school with a high intake of poor children can still be
attractive to parents if it performs very well academically. Given that on average poor children tend
to under-perform relative to their better-off peers, however, the school’s educational quality has to
be considerably higher to more than offset this initial detriment. Turing to the second question, our
econometric model produces potentially different trade-off values for each respondent, and indeed
the researcher would not expect families to have exactly the same preferences. the researcher show
that the distribution of trade-off values mostly overlap for the highest socio-economic quintile and the
lowest.

Several factors may be considered in selecting school and degree program like quality
education, the people from the environment, personal choice; and accessibility of the school from
students' residences. This study entitled utilized a descriptive type of research method with
Freshman Maritime students as respondents. Findings revealed that it is the personal choice of the
with the support primarily from their parents wherein quality education through being known as home
of board top notchers and its standards are considered big factor for their decision. They also
believed that finishing maritime education would bring them in employment abroad which is basically
the nature of duties and responsibilities of seafarers. High interest towards the degree program is
also manifested among the maritime students. Maritime students graduated from public schools have
significantly higher chance of being influenced by people in choosing the school and degree program
and they also have significantly higher degree of interest towards the maritime program compared

The researchers use non-scientific sampling. Grade 10 students of Junior High School are the
chosen respondents because they surely have reasons on their school preference for their upcoming
senior highschool and also they are the completers so there is high possibility that they will transfer
to a new school. “Non-scientific research” is a sampling technique where the samples are gathered
