INTRODUCTION
:
Universally it is claimed that all human beings (men and women) are equal. Many new
coinage like ‘feminism’, ‘chairperson’, ‘women empowerment’, ‘women emancipation’
came in vogue. Statutory provisions are formulated and enacted to safeguard the rights
of women. Gender discrimination is claimed to be prohibited at all spheres in all
societies. India boast of high status at equal footing in yore days. But these are all lame
talks. Women are still considered subordinate to men in all sphere of life.
The bellow status of women is manifested from the fact that rarely any parents prefer to
have girl child. Law is authorised to curb the gender identification at foetus stage but the
real situation is far different from what it looks like. The alarming dwindling sex ratio
proves this fact. The survey reports on crime against women brought into focus the
pathetic condition of law enforcement agencies and the ineffectiveness of the protective
laws to check the growing incident of crime against women.
Through this article, an attempt has been made to analyse in brief the problems faced
by the women in the society. The paper also depicts the constraints and the bondages
prevailing in the Indian society.
