Aditya Birla Group – A Dependable Reinforce for Indian Infrastructure Development -

Nandikanti Srinivas, IIM Ranchi

Why Aditya Birla Group is big in your life?
India is the fastest growing trillion-dollar economy in the world and stands on 6th position
with nominal GDP $2.6 trillion. As per recent Modi 2.0 Union Budget presented by Nirmala
Sitharaman, our Indian economy will hit $5 trillion in the next five years. In the upcoming
years, Infrastructure sector will be the key contributor for the Indian economy and have an
investment worth Rs 50 trillion by 2022 to have sustainable development in the country. And
I firmly believe, M/s UltraTech Cement Ltd., a firm of Aditya Birla Group has played a crucial
role till now and will continue to play a significant role in India’s Infrastructure development
to achieve $5 trillion economy.
M/s UltraTech Cement Ltd. is one of the world’s biggest cement manufacturers with the
capacity of 90 million tons a year having plants of grey cement, Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) &
white cement spread across India. Cement is big business for the Aditya Birla Group, whose
industry spans textiles to telecom. It makes up more than 60 percent of the Group’s
consolidated EBITDA.
Before joining IIM Ranchi, I worked for M/s Terex India Private Limited, Hosur as a Product &
Application Engineer. Terex being an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) of material
processing equipment, supplied crusher and screener equipment’s to one of the RMC plants
of UltraTech near to Indore to produce Manufactured Sand (M-Sand)/Artificial sand for
making concrete. I was happened to visit their RMC plant and was lucky enough to work with
them and see their work very carefully. I was very much impressed with the pace with which
they were constructing quality roadways and connecting them within the regions of Madhya
Pradesh.
Then I felt, M/s UltraTech Cement Ltd. under the aegis of Aditya Birla Group has played an
important and big role not only in my life but also touched lives of all Indian’s and will help
India in achieving $5 trillion economy with its core values – “Integrity”, “Commitment”,
“Passion”, “Seamlessness”, “Speed”.
How you overcame challenges to achieve your ambitions in life so far?
“Life is a journey of ups and downs. When we stop, things don’t go right” – by Pope
Francis. Hard work and Persistent are the attributes that make the person achieve his/her
ambitions in life. This thing I learned during my journey to an MBA.
It all started when I passed out from IIT(ISM) Dhanbad and started my job in M/s Terex
India Private Limited in Bangalore as Product & Application Engineer in June 2016. Coming
from a most premier technical Institute of India with Mining Machinery Engineering as a
background, I rarely had an Idea of business acumen & how an organization works. And that
too working closely with the Sales team of 4 different verticals in Terex, I felt a bit low and
depressed. At this moment, I decided to pursue my higher education in Management, which
can help me to take an educated decision and professionally serve the company.
But the real challenge beings. Being a Product & Application Engineer, my work
involved traveling 20-22days in a month to all over India, catching early morning flights,
covering 400-500kms of distance in a day in car, dealing with people of different states,
Saturdays and Sundays were no exception which used to take away all my energy at the end
of the tour. There used to be no time to pursue my dreams of higher education.
But I didn’t lose hope and started my CAT preparation by enrolling Career Launcher
classes on the weekend in Koramangala, Bangalore in June 2018. With great difficulty, I
attended the course in June and July month only. But I use to take mocks and analyze them
thoroughly and persistently whenever I used to get free time. As the days passed on, the CAT
exam was on the verge, only one week was remaining for the exam.
Above all these, another situation added. All of a sudden, I got a call from my father
that my mother has been admitted in hospital and she needs to undergo an operation. I got
depressed and dropped the plan of taking the exam and came to Hyderabad (native place) to
see my mother. Two days before the exam, she had undergone surgery and told her the plan
of dropping my CAT exam. But she filled the hope in me and encouraged me to take the exam.
With that support, I decided to take a CAT. I cleared the exam with flying colors in my
first attempt. Though I couldn’t be able to get calls from Old IIMs, I could able to convert all
10 New IIMs and IIM Lucknow -Sustainable Management. Then I realized that Hard work and
Persistence are the two traits that helped me to overcome the challenge in this journey.
Currently, I am pursuing my MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Ranchi – Batch 2019-
2021.
This is my story - A journey to MBA with ups, downs, and challenges…………
