1 Product description

1.1 Purpose

1.1.1 AS 271 programming software

The Questor electronic safe lock offers flexible programming and configuration options. Many
functions can be programmed directly at the lock using the keypad on the input unit. Some
English

settings, however, can only be configured using the Windows® programming software. This
documentation contains a description of the AS 271 programming software and all of the
associated functions.

1.1.2 AS 270 activation software

The Questor safe lock has three different modes of operation. The AS 270 activation software
for Windows® is used to switch to one of the two interactive one-time combination modes
which are available. This documentation contains a description of the AS 270 activation
software and all of the associated functions.

1.2 System components

The various components of the Questor system are listed below in order to provide an
overview. Some components are optional or are intended for expansion and integration of the
system with other software. The AS 270 activation software and management software, or an
integrated solution with a Questor interface (APHI), are required for operation in interactive
mode.

1.2.1 Questor lock

The Questor lock consists of a motorized lock with standard dimensions and an
input unit with green navigation buttons. The lock is shipped from the factory in bank
mode with master code 00123456, and functions as a conventional combination
lock.

1.2.2 AS 270 activation software

The AS 270 activation software for Windows® operating systems is used to switch
from bank mode into one of the two one-time combination modes, OTC or ICS.

1.2.3 AS 271 programming software

Basic settings for the lock, such as the language, time delays for opening, inputs
and outputs, etc., are configured with the AS 271 programming software.

1.2.4 AS 273 management software

The AS 273 management software is used to issue one-time combinations. This
software controls and logs all processes, and enables the centralized management
of all locks and users.

1.2.5 AS 274 server management software (optional)

This practical software makes it possible for a large number of users to work with
the Questor system at the same time. Even the most sophisticated systems can be
managed with this software.

1.2.6 APHI - Application Programming Hardware Interface (optional)

The APHI external interface was developed for the integration of lock management
with a customer’s existing software solution. Once it has been integrated with
existing software, APHI handles all tasks related to the issuance of one-time
combinations.

1.3 Modes of operation

The Questor electronic safe lock offers three different modes of operation in a single lock.

1.3.1 Bank mode

As a factory default, the Questor lock is set to function as a conventional electronic
combination lock in bank mode. It opens after a preprogrammed opening combination has
been entered.

English
1.3.2 Interactive mode OTC (One Time Combination)
In this operating mode, it is possible to generate a one-time opening combination for a
Questor lock for a user who has been registered in the management software (Section
“System components” on page 4). This combination allows the lock to be opened one time. It
is valid for an unlimited period of time. As soon as the lock has been opened, the previously
generated one-time combination will no longer be valid.

1.3.3 Interactive mode ICS (Interactive Code System)

This operating mode provides tight control over events at the lock. An opening combination
can only be generated when the user is on-site at the lock, and after they have entered their
four-digit identification number on the lock to register themselves. Only then can the
management software be used to generate an opening combination with various time delays.

1.3.4 Switching between modes of operation

The lock can be switched from one operating mode to another at any time, provided that the
lock is in the open position. Attempts to switch between modes of operation on a closed lock
will be rejected with an error message.

1.3.4.1 Switching from bank mode to one of the interactive modes (OTC or ICS)

The AS 270 activation software is used to switch from bank mode into one of the two one-
time combination modes. This procedure is referred to as activation.

1.3.4.2 Reverting from OTC or ICS mode back into bank mode

The AS 271 programming software is used to reset an activated Questor lock. The reset
function is only available in the programming software if the software has been linked to an
activated lock (see page EN-14).

Enabling/disabling the duress code function

✔ Duress alarms can be triggered at any time, using any type of code. When attempting to open
the lock, the entry of a duress code starts the programmed duress time delay.
Duress codes will only be accepted if this function has been activated through the
master code.

The master code must be changed

i The default master code (0 0 1 2 3 4 5 6) is identical for all locks of this series, thus it is not
suitable for everyday use.
After initialization and testing, the master code must be changed from the factory
default value and set to a personally selected value.

Creating unique codes

! During the course of commissioning and assigning the unit, all codes must be personalized.
Never use simple numerical combinations (e.g. 11223344, 12345678) or personal data
(e.g. birthdays). For security reasons, codes should be changed at regular intervals.

Lost codes

! Lost/forgotten codes can only be deleted and newly defined by using a higher-level code.
Please bear in mind, that a lost/forgotten master code can not be recovered or
reissued under any circumstances. There is no so-called “override code” or “super
code”!

instructions), the lock will be in a blocked state and can not be
operated or opened.
When this box is checked, the relay outputs of the lock (in bank

prevent more than one lock from being open at the same time.
The duress function is switched on by checking this box. The
Duress alarm entry of a duress code will ONLY be recognized if this box is

When this box is checked, two valid user codes will be required
to open the lock in bank mode. The master code and the courier
code are exempt from this rule, as either one can still be used
Four-eyes principle alone to open the lock when the four-eyes principle is active.
This is only applicable if the master code has been authorized
for access and/or a courier code has been programmed in the
lock.

5 Activating the lock

Before the application can be started, it must be installed according to the instructions in
Section “Installing the AS 270 activation software” on page 8
Activation is used to switch the operating mode of the Questor lock from bank mode into one
of the two interactive modes - ICS or OTC. This procedure effectively binds the individual lock
to a customer’s Questor system. This means that after activation, the lock can only be
operated in conjunction with management software (also see Section “System components”

English
on page 4) from the same customer.

Customer-specific system number!

i Every Questor system is registered to a specific customer through a one-time identification

process. Registration takes place at the point of sale for the software or an APHI 4000. At this
time, the appropriate registration form is filled out and sent to Kaba.

To activate the lock in a customer’s system, a Kaba-programmed USB dongle is required for
the AS 270 software. Additional AS 270 dongles can be ordered if needed.

5.1 Starting the application

If a valid copy-protection dongle is connected to one of the computer’s USB ports and the
appropriate driver has been installed, the application can be started by clicking on the
program icon that was automatically created in the “Kaba” folder under the Windows “Start
Menu”.

5.1.1 Connection with the lock

The lock must be connected to the computer via the serial interface for the activation process
(see Section “Connecting the lock and the computer” on page 12)

5.2 Using the application

5.2.1 User interface

English

Activation software user interface

• The “Lock name” field is used to identify the lock. The user-created name can be changed
afterwards at any time.
• The “Lock description” field allows for a more precise description of the lock or the
installation site. The description can be changed afterwards at any time.
• If the master code of the lock has been changed, it must be entered in the apropriate field
“Master Code” in order to allow AS270 to connect to the lock. With this field left empty the
software will try to connect to the lock using a preprogrammed master code from the USb
dongle or, if the dongle does not contain a master code, connect with the default factory
code.
• To change the locks master code at the same time while activating the lock, enter a new
master code and cofirm this code in the appropriate fields “New master code” and
“Confirm new master code”.

Loss of the master code!

! If the master code is lost, a connection will not be able to be established again between the
lock and the programming software. Likewise, the lock will not be able to be reset again
without the master code.
If the master code is lost, the lock will have to be replaced!

• The ICS check box is used to select between the two interactive operating modes that are
available. If the box is checked, then the lock will be activated in ICS mode. If the box is
not checked, the AS 270 software will activate the lock in OTC mode (also see Section
“Modes of operation” on page 5).
• In order to establish a connection with the lock, the assigned port for the serial interface
must be selected from the list.
• The language for the software is changed in the Language selection menu.

Connection to the lock with AS 270!

i The AS 270 activation software uses the factory default master code to connect with the lock.
Make sure that the current master code in the lock is set to the factory default (factory default
master code: 00123456)!

• Activate - writes the activation data to the lock that is connected to the computer. At the
same time the activation data is being written to the lock memory, an activation file is
created for importing the data into the management software at a later time. The default
name of the activation file is “act527_1.dat” and it is saved in the installation directory of
the software.
