A detailed lesson plan in Science Grade 7

I. Objectives

At the end of the session, the students are expected to:

a. describe what are rocks and how does it formed;

b. give important functions of rocks; and
c. draw the rock cycle.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Rocks
Reference: Science 7, Learner’s Material.
Materials: Visual aids.

III. Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preliminary Activities

Prayer.

May I request Schan to please lead the Schan: Classmates, let us all stand, bow our
prayer. head and let us pray.

Students will pray.

Greetings.

Good morning class. Good morning Teacher Greg, Mabuhay!

Ok, so before you take your seats, arrange

your chairs and pickup pieces of dirt.

Checking of Attendance.

For your attendance, those who are

assigned to check, do it and after present it Yes, sir.
to me, okay?
Review.

Last meeting we have discussed about Soil

Resources right? Yes sir.

What is soil? Soil is a thin layer covering the earths

surface and is formed from the weathering
of rocks
What are the three types of weathering?
Physical, Chemical and Biological
Very good! weathering sir!
Do you still have questions regarding the
topic last meeting class?
No, sir.

B. Motivation.

Okay, may I ask everyone to please stand

up?
We’ll have some energizer
Okay sir!
C. Activity.

Before we go on to our proper discussion,

we’ll have an activity with the group of four.

I have here jumbled letters. Encircle the

words that you found. Okay sir!

What have you found? Rocks, Igneous, Metamorphic, Sedimentary

and Cycle sir.
Very good. What do you think is our topic
this morning?
About Rocks sir?
Excellent! This lesson will give us knowledge
on how does rocks formed and the rock
cycle.

D. Analysis.

We all know what is rock,’ right? Yes sir!

Do you ever ask yourself how does the rock

formed? Yes sir!
Okay, but before we answer how the rocks
do form, let us define first what rock is.
Rock is a solid collection of mineral grains
that grow or become cemented together
How are rocks formed begs three distinct
answers:

1. Igneous Rock Formation It is formed when melted rocks cools and

solidifies. Examples of this rocks are granite,
scoria, pumice and absidian.

2. Sedimentary Rocks Formation It is formed when soil and other materials on

Earth’s surface are eroded and finally sttle
down forming one layer of sediments.
Examples of this are sandstone, limestone,
shale and gypsum.

3. Metamorphic Rocks Formation To metamorphose or to morph means to

change in form. Metamorphic rocks are
actually products of rocks that have
undergone changes. Changes occur when
the original rocks are subjected to extreme
heat and pressure beneath the Earth’s
surface. Examples of this are marble, slate,
schist, gneiss and etc.

Now we’ll be talking about the rock cycle.

I have here an illustration, what have you
observed? There is a volcano and if there is volcano of
course there are magma. If it cools and
solidifies it is now the igneous rocks. When it
breaks down by wind and water the rocks
are sedimentary and when the rocks are
heated, it does change; forming crystals and
this are metamorphic rocks. When Earth’s
tectonic plates move around, they produce
heat. When they collide, they build
mountains and metamorphose. The rock
Class, remember this, Igneous rocks can cycle never stops.
change into sedimentary rocks or into
metamorphic rocks and vice versa.

E. Application

So what do you think are the importance of

rocks? Anyone of you who can give
importance? Minerals are extracted from rocks.

Rocks give beauties of nature.

Rocks also play important role in building

houses and other infrastructures.
Very good class!

F. Abstraction.

So as a summary, what is rock? Rocks are natural substance composed of

solid crystals of different minerals that have
been fused together into a solid lump.

Very good. What are the three types of

rocks? Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic
Rocks.
Yes, very good. Do you have any questions
class?
None so far sir!

G. Agreement

This time, please get ½ sheet of paper and

draw the rock cycle.

G. Assignment.

For your assignment, make a collage on the

importance of rocks. And submit it next
week.

That’s all for today and Good bye class! Goodbye and thank you Teacher Greg!
