John: Life and Teachings of Jesus

Name: Crestyl Faye Rodrigo Cagatan Section: Pyxis – 11 Score: ____/100 August 9, 2019

Essay: you may write your answers at the back of this paper

1. Describe how the story of the wedding at Cana depicts the life of Jesus at the cross? John 2:1-11; 19:25-27. (25 points)
This is the first of Jesus’s miracles. If we will study it spiritually, we can see that it illustrates the purpose of His life
and foretells the impact of his ministry. This illustrates the Lord’s first mission: to reveal the loving, caring meaning
(the wine) hidden inside the external forms safeguarded by the Jewish church (the waterpots). This could be
interpreted by saying simply that it is always darkest before the dawn, but good things are on the way. The more
usual interpretation, however, is that this is a reference to the appearance of Jesus, whom the author of the Fourth
Gospel regards as being himself "the good wine".

2. Describe how the story of the temple cleansing alludes to Jesus’ divinity and to His death and resurrection? (25 points)
Within a week of this incident, Jesus is dead. Matthew, Mark, and Luke agree that this is the event that functioned
as the 'trigger' for Jesus' death. Jesus was so angry at these robbers, so He “would not allow anyone to carry
anything through the temple. And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be
called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers” Today, the temple is our
bodies, and for believers, the temple is no longer necessary because the Holy Spirit dwells in and lives in every
believer. It is just as the Apostle Paul wrote; our “bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit” so even though Jesus
might not have to make a whip out of cords, He does have to discipline us in love.

3. Compare the temple-cleansing scene in John with those of Mathew, Mark, and Luke. What are the major similarities and
differences? What is the main concern of Jesus in each of the accounts of Matthew 21:12-17; Mark 11:15-19; Luke 19:45-48?
(50 points)
The authors chose different ways of using geography as a tool for arranging their accounts of Jesus' life.
When we seek to understand what the evangelists are doing as interpreters of Jesus' life, we often find that their
different approaches help clarify and draw out implications from Jesus' acts and teachings. This often entails
sharing the stories of Jesus' life in a topical or logical order, not chronological. In this light, alleged "discrepancies"
and "contradictions" are seen as mere "differences." Each Gospel proclaims that story through a narrative lens
(through stories, in other words).

Bonus Question (20 points)

If you were allowed to choose one miracle to jumpstart a new ministry for God, what miracle do you think would have a significant
impact on people in today’s world? Why? (5 points)
I would probably choose the time when Jesus fed thousands of men through fish and loaves of bread. It would have a
significant impact to the people today it’s because the people will realize on how loving and merciful God He is.
Because today, we can see that the world is getting wicked each day. It illustrates Jesus' authority over nature and His
divine intervention on behalf of others, showing that He is concerned about both humans' physical and spiritual needs.
This miracle is a magnificent act of creative power. No amount of human reasoning can reduce this miracle to a natural
phenomenon. Indeed, complete understanding of miracles is beyond human capability to understand. By an act of His
own creative power, Jesus revealed proof of His deity to thousands.

What important learning would you like to apply in your life? (5 points)
The Gospel of John presents many important lessons for living life on earth and determining our eternal destiny after
we die. First, the book clearly establishes that Jesus Christ is the Messiah that was prophesied in the Old Testament of
the Bible. Second, the book substantiates the purpose of Jesus Christ and the reason He was sent to earth by God. In
addition, the Gospel of John distinguishes itself from the other gospels by focusing less on events and more on spiritual
themes. Lastly, there is a clear message in the Gospel of John that helps us understand the truth about God, the truth
about eternity, and the truth about making a choice to accept Jesus Christ as our personal Savior. Of course, a
summary of this Gospel can only provide highlights to the actual text and cannot replace it. We absolutely encourage
you to read the Gospel of John to learn more about Jesus Christ and His plan for your life.
