COURSE TITLE: METHODS OF TEACHING IN EARLY CHILDHOOD


COURSE CODE: ECP 7201
HOURS TAUGHT: 3 hrs per week

PURPOSE OF COURSE
The course introduces students to many different methods for teaching childhood
learners. The methods vary and as such incorporate the needs of the learners. As such
it will enable early childhood educators to teach effectively and with variety to meet the
purpose of education. Young children enjoy poems, songs, and simple actions.
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the course, learners should be able to:
 Identify the different methods of teaching early childhood learners
 Explain the different methods of teaching
 Develop ideas of a specific method of teaching; ponder on what they could do in
challenging situations.
 Discuss the strategies of effective teaching.

PURPOSE OF COURSE
The course equips students with skills of handling children at different stages of
development. The students need to be equipped with knowledge about the process of
human development and how the development process affects the individual
adjustment and there after the challenges a person faces at different stage of life. The
learners will appreciate the contributions of different theorist on child development and
developmental stages.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES


By the end of the course, the students should be able to:
 Describe the different theories on child development
 Explain what leads to poor study habits, memory loss and reading difficulties
 Identify and explain the stages of child development

 Nature and causes of academic deficiencies
 Circumstances leading to poor study habits, memory loss and reading difficulties
 Effects of deficiencies on the child, family and community
 Nature of remediation program to address deficiencies
