Dollar General Statement to NPR On Point

For 80 years, Dollar General has remained focused on providing our customers with everyday low prices,
value and convenience through our small-box neighborhood stores and our mission of Serving Others.

We are disappointed a small number of policymakers have chosen to limit our ability to serve their
constituents and communities. We believe the addition of each new Dollar General store presents
positive economic growth for the communities we proudly serve. We demonstrate our commitment to
being a positive business partner through the creation of local jobs and numerous opportunities for
employee development and career advancement, as well as through grants provided through the Dollar
General Literacy Foundation that positively impact literacy and education initiatives at schools, non-
profits and libraries.

Re: Store Selection

Our customers are at the center of all that we do. From rural areas to metropolitan centers and all
communities in between, Dollar General proudly helps a broad range of customers save time and money
on items they use and replenish most often.

In selecting store sites, we take a number of factors into consideration, carefully evaluating each potential
new store location to ensure we can continue to meet our customers’ price, value and selection needs
and provide convenience for customers who may not have affordable nearby retail options. Site selection
is never determined by a community’s racial or ethnic composition.

Re: Grocery Store Closures

We believe our small-box footprint and product assortment helps our customers stretch their budgets,
particularly on items such as paper and cleaning products, which often are offered at much higher prices
in both large and small grocery stores. Our stores provide customers with both alternative and
complementary options to items sold in larger-box grocers and retailers, including many components of
a healthy diet such as milk, eggs, bread, cheese, frozen and canned vegetables, proteins and more. As
such, we believe the proximity of a Dollar General store to a local grocer provides customers with a more
comprehensive and local retail shopping experience.
