Punahou Physical Education

Substitute Teacher Protocol & Basic Expectations (v.2 – 8/19)

K-8

K-8 Physical Education Department Statement of Philosophy

Informed by the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) the
department teaches students the benefits of establishing healthy habits and
maintaining physically
active lifestyles. We provide learning environments where students: (1)
value physical activity and its contributions to health and wellness, (2)
develop positive, responsible personal and social behavior, and (3) practice
skills necessary to participate in a variety of physical activities.

Basic expectations for ALL PE SUBSTITUTES:

1) Student Safety is the most important part of the day - Physically and Emotionally. Please
be on time (even early) to all classes to provide supervision of all students prior to class
starting.
2) Be present in the same space/room/area at all times as the students. Do not leave
students unattended
3) Please refrain from using cellphones/computers/tablets unless there is an emergency or
it is for student learning purposes
4) Please dress appropriately in athletic wear with athletic shoes as you most likely will be
moving/demonstrating/setting up equipment, etc. No tank tops, and we highly
recommend sun protection
5) PE teachers stand the entire class unless there is a rare reason to sit. It is expected that
you model active and fit teaching habits and sitting down is not a normal part of the
day.
6) Take roll and leave detailed explanations of how the class went, who behaved well or
misbehaved, any unusual issues, or any sick/injured and unable to participate students.
Also, please mark any “out of full uniform” students. Please note what you did during
class and anything that needs to be followed up on.
7) Ask any other PE teacher or Dept. Head for any help or guidance at any time, we are
here to help.
8) Equipment for any teacher 6-8 is found in the respective locker rooms and you may call
or email them for any clarification or request for additional/different equipment. Please
return all equipment to the place you picked it up from
a. Girls Locker room: Kathy & Stacey 944-5817 (girlslocker@punahou.edu)
b. Boys Locker room: James & Scott 944-3603 (boyslocker@punahou.edu)
9) Please be sure all facilities are locked when you leave.
