Math Lives With Us

It was a late night chat between between two strangers who just met yesterday. They had
a date, a casual one, so they talked about how fun it was until the boy confessed, “You
know, there are no words that can describe how beautiful you are”. The girl blushed and
replied, “Thank you”. The compliment blossomed her heart. “But math can” the boy
interrupted, “4 out of ten.” Now this is why math is important because math can describe
things that words cannot just like the boy describing his opinions through ration and
proportion. But, math can describe more and even beyond. We live in this world with
more than 200 different languages but all of us knew one math, the same math. Therefore,
we have the unity in terms of math because eventually, math is the language of the
universe.

Math is also a methodical application of matter. Numbers without math is just figures and
problem solving without math cannot be solved. It is the science that deals with the logic
of quantity, shape and arrangement. The abstract reasoning, spatial thinking, problem-
solving ability, power of reasoning, and even communication skills are applied with math.
In this way, it can explains things clearer and helps our life easier.

Math is demanded everyday by the necessities of the society. We started using math a
long time ago like how our primitive ancestors who relied on math to calculate the
position of the sun, used body measurements and the physics of hunting. We started to
learn math by counting numbers, recognizing geometry, learning algebra, understanding
physics, applying calculus and even determining limits and knowing the infinite. Math
help us innovating the future when professionals like engineers, architects, scientist,
mathematicians, researchers, inventors and economist use their own art of mathematics to
construct structures, design urban planning, discover formulas, build machines and
robots, conducting surveys, manage business operations and more. However, even simple
occupation such as carpenters, mechanic, shopkeeper, a cook or a farmer needed math in
their everyday life.

The moment we wake up, math is time. We need to know the concepts of math in order to
tell time. There are 24 hours in a day which we split the day into two equal-sized 12 hour
halves which composed of 60 minutes in a hour and 60 seconds in a minute. We need to
acquire the general understanding of how long a second can take. Even fractions can tell
time like how someone said it’s “a quarter to fourth” which means a quarter of an hour
remains until it reaches four o’clock.

Even the food we intake is from the application of math. The cook should know the right
measurements and temperature to produce a decent meal. When the recipe needs 2
tablespoons and you only have a teaspoon or the recipe needs 3/4 cup but you only have a
half cup measuring tool, you may only know how much you need to add up by
understanding fractions, math and conversions. You also need to know converting Celsius
to Fahrenheit and understanding ratios and proportions.
Math is money management. Even a typical person who manages their own financial
need knowledge beyond basic concepts of arithmetic like algebra. This is how we
understand the terms of a loan or an investment account. Just like how we use the
compound interest formula to determine how much interest is needed to be paid each
month in a typical mortgage. By managing money, we can use it to plan future
expenditures or even set goals by wise spending habits.

Math can aid health like how doctors can cure a disease by calculating how much
milligrams of medicine a patient needs or healthy diet by measuring the body mass index
and calories intake. Driving, home improvement, shopping, drawing and watching news.
It’s almost impossible to get through everyday without math since our world works
functionally and systematically with it. Studying math provides you stronger logical skills
which makes you more efficient in your life and you can navigate the society because
math lives with us.
