COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1. ET302.CEO.1: To illustrate fundamental concepts required for communication


2. ET302.CEO.2: To analyse amplitude, angle modulation techniques, their types, mathematical
analysis and representation
3. ET302.CEO.3: To study random variables and random, stochastic processes
4. ET302.CEO.4: To explain analog communication receivers, their types & characteristics
5. ET302.CEO.5: To study noise performance of different analog modulation techniques

COURSE OUTCOMES:
After completion of the course, the students will be able to

2. ET302.CO.2: Examine different amplitude, angle modulation techniques

THEORY:

Unit I Electronic Communication 8 Hours


Electromagnetic spectrum, Review of Signal & its representations, Block Diagram representation of a
generalized communication system, Communication resources: communication channels,
communication modes (Simplex, Duplex etc.), channel bandwidth, Signal transmission: baseband &
pass band signals, analog & digital transmission, Modulation, Need of modulation, demodulation
concepts, classification and sources of noise, SNR, equivalent noise bandwidth, noise temperature,
noise figure.

Unit II Amplitude Modulation Techniques 8 Hours


Types of Analog Modulations, Principles of Amplitude Modulation, AM current & power relations, AM
generation & detections, DSBSC modulation, DSBSC generation & detection, Integrated Circuit
Modulators (MC1496), SSB modulation, SSB generation & detection. Case study: AM Application:
amateur radio, Navy and Aviation for communications Self-Study: VSB modulation, VSB generation &
detection, Comparison of AM, DSBSC, SSB & VSB.

Unit III Angle Modulation Techniques 8 Hours


Principles of Angle Modulation, Theory of FM – Basic Concepts : Frequency deviation and modulation
index, Phasor representation of Angle modulated wave, bandwidth of Angle modulated signal, Spectrum
analysis of FM wave, Narrow band and Wideband FM, Generation of FM wave : Direct & Indirect, FM
detection, Relationship between FM & PM Case Study: Applications of FM: Digital synthesizers Self-
Study: Advantages, Disadvantages & applications of Angle Modulation, Comparison of AM, FM & PM

Unit IV Analog Signal Transmitter & Receiver Systems 8 Hours


AM transmitters, Receiver parameters, AM receivers, Double conversion AM receivers, Linear
integrated circuit AM receiver, FM receivers, FM stereo broadcasting, Two way FM radio
communication.

Unit V Random Variables & Stochastic Processes 8 Hours


Concept of Random variables, Joint & Conditional probability, Statistical independence, Bayes
Theorem, Probability distribution functions & Probability density functions, Examples of probability
density functions (Uniform, Rayleigh, Gaussian, Chi – Square), Central limit theorem. Random
Processes: Physical significance of random process, Statistical averages (mean, variance, correlation),
Power spectral densities, Stationarity, ergodicity, transmission of random processes through LTI filter.

Unit VI Noise Calculations in Analog Systems 8 Hours


Noise in Communication System, Representation of noise in communication system, Power Spectral
density of noise, Noise calculations in DSB SC, Noise calculations in SSB SC, Noise in AM wave, Noise
in envelop detector, Noise in frequency modulation system, threshold effect in FM, Pre emphasis & De-
emphasis circuits, Noise in phase modulation system.

Study of double side band suppressed carrier modulation technique

Study of single side band suppressed carrier modulation technique

Study of frequency modulation and demodulation circuit

Study of AM transmitter

Practical No. 7 Design of Mixer 4 Hours

Design a circuit of mixer using Simulink / Multisim

Practical No. 8 Pre emphasis and De emphasis 4 Hours

Design a pre-emphasis and de-emphasis circuit using MATLAB / Multisim

Practical No. 9 Modulation Circuitry 4 Hours

Design any of the above modulation techniques in MATLAB / Multisim or (Write a program to build the
modulation circuit)
