Message from the Registrar
It is a great pleasure to issue a message for the student guidebook of the Faculty of Engineering
Technology of the Open University of Sri Lanka, which is one of the leading faculties offering
Engineering Degree Programmes in Sri Lanka.
The Open University of Sri Lanka was established on 22.07.1980 by the Gazette Extraordinary No. 87/10
of May, 08, 1980 by Hon. J R Jayawardane, the then Minister of Higher Education.
Presently, the Open University of Sri Lanka has five Faculties namely, Faculty of Engineering
Technology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences,
Faculty of Health Sciences and 33 administrative divisions. The University also provides its services
through a network of 09 regional centres & 19 study centres, in different parts of the country.
The University administration assists the students in numerous ways by providing materials, financial
related matters, conducting of final examinations and issuing certificates, student welfare, providing
infrastructure facilities etc. With all this support, I believe that anyone who wishes to pursue studies in
open distance learning mode can accomplish his/her higher educational qualifications successfully.
Wish you all the very best with your studies at the Faculty of Engineering Technology of the OUSL.

Message from the Dean
Faculty of Engineering Technology of the Open University of Sri Lanka, which comes under the
University Grants Commission, offers Certificate, Diploma, Undergraduate and Postgraduate
programmes for those who wish to obtain their post-secondary qualifications. As a distance learning
institution, the study programmes of the Faculty are designed in such a way that the student can follow
them with minimum number of face to face teaching sessions. In the meantime, presence of the student
is essential for number of activities. The Faculty has well equipped laboratories to carry out the studies
successfully. Well-qualified academic staff of the Faculty provides required learner support with the
help of educational technology techniques.
Since the programmes are offered in distance mode, the student can work while studying in the
University. The duration of a degree programme depends on the time availability of the student for
her/his studies. However, there is a minimum and maximum duration of a programme. Faculty also
recognises prior qualifications of the applicants and they can enter to the programme at different levels.
The University has taken steps to cater to the demands of the regions of the country through the regional
network and the student can carry out many of the academic activities without coming to the central
campus at Nawala. Since for many the study system at the Open University is a new experience, the
student needs dedication and determination to succeed.
At present the Faculty consists of six Academic Departments, with over sixty well qualified dedicated
academic staff members. Faculty offers three undergraduate study programmes, namely Bachelor of
Technology Honours in Engineering [BTechHons(Eng)], Bachelor of Industrial Studies Honours [BIS
Hons], and Bachelor of Software Engineering Honours [BSEHons]. The students following study
programmes leading to BTechHons(Eng) or BISHons may also obtain a Higher Diploma in a relevant
discipline after fulfilling the requirements. Time has proven that the graduates of the Faculty are
working very successfully in the relevant industries both locally and abroad.

6.5 Postgraduate Research Degrees
Research keeps a person motivated, at the forefront of the respective professional or academic career
while contributing to solve problems scientifically for the benefit of the society.
Supervised research leading to a higher degree is really only the beginning of a research career.
Basically, it provides training in research methodology and research techniques.
The Faculty provides opportunities for science and technology based research in most of the
Engineering disciplines. All research students are initially required to register for an MPhil degree.
Suitable students could however transfer to a PhD degree after about a year of work, on the
recommendation of their supervisor(s).
Students are normally expected to possess an Honours Degree or an equivalent qualification to read for
a research degree. However, in exceptional circumstances, other suitably qualified candidates may also
be considered for admission.
Students who register for Master/Doctor of Philosophy degrees are required to submit a thesis within
2-7 years. It is expected that the work should reflect the student’s research capability and that it should
make a significant contribution to knowledge in the area of study.
If you feel that you are competent and motivated to pursue higher studies for a research degree, you
should contact a senior academic staff member of the relevant academic department in which you wish
to carry out your research.
