IMPORTANCE OF LEARNING ENGLISH FOR CSE STUDENTS

The English language is the international language of all over the world [1]. It is the

most commonly spoken language in the world. One out of five people can speak or at

least understand English. English is the official language of 53 countries [2]. Around

400 million people around the world speak English as a first language [2]. English is

the language of science, of aviation, computers, diplomacy, media industry, internet,

international articles, newspapers, journals, tourism, etc. English is the auxiliary

language of computing. Therefore, computer science and engineering mostly depends

upon English. In comparison to other sciences, where Latin and Greek are the

principal sources of vocabulary, computer science borrows more extensively from

English [3]. All most all the universities of home and abroad refers the English written

books and articles to conduct CSE course. In order to master the computer science

and engineering knowledge and skills better, the students should own the English

language proficiency. In all the international programming contests, English is the

commonly used language for the participation. Most of the scientific publications,

papers or journals in the world are written in English. Moreover, most engineering

professors in various universities are also conducting their lectures in English. Hence,

engineering students should at least master the basic English ability to deal with the

countless English computer science and engineering lectures, tutorials, labs, projects

and papers. Finally, they have to submit their important thesis, still in English. When

the will be graduated from the university and become real engineers, they will find that

English appears even more crucial than it used to be. Engineers usually work in

groups since an individual can seldom solve their task. The property of their work

determines that an engineer needs to cooperate and communicate with different

people from different part of the world. In order to understand and coordinate with their

colleagues and accomplish their projects fluently in their job field, computer engineers

have to have very good command over English.
