COM-115 OJT

Alyssa Jewel D. Maravilla

WEEKLY JOURNAL #1

1. What are my tasks and responsibilities in the department I belong to?

Candy Magazine assigned me in the Digital Editorial Department headed by Candy's Editor
in Chief, Ms. Ysabel Y. Yuzon. This department is in charge of Candy's online content for
Candymag.com which includes online articles under a variety of categories that cater to high school
Filipina teens such as Fashion, Beauty, Lifestyle and even articles that are purely about 'hugot'
topics such as self-acceptance or real-life coming out stories.

Other than articles, Candymag also creates content that is highly visual and less text heavy
which are also posted on their Facebook page. However, I think that these creative content are not
exclusive to the work of graphic designers/illustrators as the content still has to be conceptualized
before making any creative visuals. For example, on my first day, I was given a task to make
interactive Instagram stories for Candy under the categories of Beauty and Fashion. I brainstormed
ideas about beauty and fashion until I was able to create questions or polls which will be engaging
enough to answer. My questions or polls will not simply be text on Instagram, it has to be visually
appealing so that Instagram users will be attracted enough to be hooked, read and answer to the
stories. So after making the content, I laid them out and added designs and other images to go with
the content so my supervisor will know how the content will look like when uploaded in Candy's IG
story.

2. Which subjects, that I have taken up, can be useful in my OJT? How so?

I had taken up several majors that have been useful and will be helpful for the upcoming
tasks ahead. Writing features for Fundamentals of Journalism, for example, has taught me to be
more concise and shortening the delaying technique in writing for immediate reader engagement.
Even other majors that have required me to write essays have helped me practice writing.

Even majors that have required creative outputs like advertisements, publication materials or
even Powerpoint presentations have definitely helped me as I have practiced how to make creative
materials. However, now I am starting to practice Photoshop too as I learned that it is a very
valuable skill to have. I had a major that taught Photoshop but I found it hard to learn all the features
of the software and enjoy creating when lessons and outputs were limited within deadlines and the
short span of a few months. I think it will take more practice than that to fully learn and enjoy

software like Photoshop. I aim to relearn Photoshop during my time in my OJT and hopefully apply it
in future tasks through my personal initiative.

3. What information, terminologies, or procedures have I learned in the past week?

As of now, I am only on my second day working for the company. I cannot say that I have
learned anything too specific yet as I am still waiting for my supervisor to assign me tasks. However,
I will say that I have been learning about the work environment here and continuously managing my
required documents for my OJT to ensure that everything is organized and accomplished.

I have also been trying to be more productive every time I am not preoccupied. I have also
tried to take initiative and approach my superior to ask if she has any tasks that she would like to
assign for me while I was idle.

Me on a Tuesday morning in my station (06/18/19) reading articles related to my feature article topic. I'm collecting
information during this time to incorporate in my feature.
