Course Title: Introduction to Computing
Course Code: CS - 1101
Course Duration: One Semester (16 weeks of study)

Course Instructor: Mr. Salah-ud-din Khokhar

Course Description: This course focuses on a breadth-first coverage of computer science


discipline, introducing computing environments, general application software, basic
computing hardware, operating systems, desktop publishing, Internet, software
applications and tools and computer usage concepts; Introducing Software engineering
and Information technology within the broader domain of computing, Social issues of
computing.

Course Goals & Objective

Goal No.1: Explain components of computer, advantages and disadvantages of


computers, computer software, game console, servers, mainframe and embedded
computers. Discuss number systems in detail.

Obj No.01: Explain components of a computing (input devices, output


devices, system unit, storage devices and communication
devices).
Obj No.02: Describe advantages and disadvantages of using computers
and evolution of internet, explain World Wide Web and E-
Commerce.
Obj No.03: Discuss system software, application software, installing
and running programs and software development.
Obj No.04: Explain desktop computers, mobile computers and mobile
devices. Describe game console, mainframe, servers,
supercomputers and embedded computers.
Obj No.05: Discuss number systems, binary numbers and boolen logic
in detail.

Goal No.2: Explain Components of the System unit and discuss role of System
Software working with Application Software.

Obj No.01: Explain motherboard, control unit, arithmetic unit, machine


cycle, registers, system clock and comparison of personal
computer processors in detail.
Obj No.02: Describe data representation like bytes and addressable
memory, memory size, Ram, cache, Rom, flash memory
and CMOS.
Obj No.03: Explain USB ports, firewire ports, buses, bays and power
supply. Discuss about leading manufacturing companies in
computer world.
Obj No.04: Discuss business software (word processing, spreadsheet,
database, presentation, personal information manager and
project management software).
Obj No.05: Explain graphics and multimedia software (CAD, desktop
publishing, oaint/image editing and video/audio editing
software), discuss software for home, personal and
educational usage.

Goal No.3: Explain the Operating Systems and Utility Programs and Describe
communication standards and Networks.

Obj No.01: Describe the operating system functionality, Discuss the


types of operating systems (Windows, Linux, Unix, Mac
OS).
Obj No.02: Explain embedded operating systems (Windows
Embedded, Windows Mobile, Palm OS, iPhone OS,
BlackBerry, Embedded Linux and Symbian OS).
Obj No.03: Explain utility programs (file manager, image viewer, disk
cleanup, disk defragmentation, backup and restore utilities,
antivirus program, spyware and adware removers, file
compression and disc burning) in detail.
Obj No.04: Explain Networks (LAN, WAN, MAN, network topologies
and intranets) and Network communication standards
(TCP/IP, Ethernet, token ring, wi-fi, Bluetooth, UWB and
WiMax).
Obj No.05: Describe communication softwares and communication
over the telephone network (dial-up lines, ISDN lines,
DSL, ATM, T-carrier lines).
Obj No.06: Explain communication devices (dial-up modems, digital
modems, wireless access points routers and switches).
Describe physical transmission media and wireless
transmission media.

Goal No.4: Describe the Database Management, Information System development


and Computer safety & Security.

Obj No.01: Discuss maintaining data (adding modifying, deleting and


validating records) and database management system (data
dictionary, data security and recovery).
Obj No.02: Discuss relational, object-oriented and multidimensional
and web databases also discuss role of database
administrator.
Obj No.03: Explain system development phases planning, (analysis,
design, implementation and maintenance) in detail..
Obj No.04: Discuss the internet and network attacks. Also explain
unauthorized access and use, hardware theft and vandalism.
Obj No.05: Discuss software theft, information theft, system failure,
backing up, wireless security, health concerns of computer
use, ethics and society.

Teaching & Learning Strategies

Class Lectures, Class Presentations, Group Discussions, Home Assignments

The course will be taught by a combination of lectures, presentations and directed reading
material. Unannounced quizzes will be taken during the lectures. All lectures may
comprise of a power point presentation, handouts and white board demonstrations. The
students will be given the assignments related to the topic covered during the different
lecture. Each student will be asked to select a research topic and give at least one
assessed presentation to the class.

Lecture Duration will be of 90 Minutes.

Assessment Strategy

 Semester Work (Assignments + Quizzes + Presentation) : 40%


 Final Term (Objective + Subjective): 10% + 50%

Evaluation is based on how well the student will perform in class, assignments, quizzes
and presentations. Performance will be monitored throughout the semester. The

examination will test the student’s understanding of the various concepts discussed
during the course.
The written examination requires students to complete a theoretical paper covering all
aspects of the course.
