Experiment 1: Construction of Phase Diagram of Partially Miscible Ternary Mixture

Schematic Diagram by Group 3 (Heavy Duty Group)

A = Acetic Acid
B = Water
C = Chloroform

I. Titration of A-B with C

Preparation of
Solution

 Prepare 5 clean Erlenmeyer

flask.
 Place 25 mL of solution in each Concentration V of A (mL) V of B (mL)
flask. 15% 3.75 21.25
30% 7.5 17.5
Note: each solution contains
45% 11.25 13.7
different concentrations of A-B see
60% 15 10
table for volumes of A & B
70% 17.5 7.5

Prepared A-B
Solutions
 Titrate using Chloroform until
first sign of turbidity appears

Note: Start with 60% solution to be

familiar with the endpoint

 Note volute of chloroform used

II. Titration of A-C with B

flask.
 Place 25 mL of solution in each
flask.

Note: each solution contains

III. After Titrations

Construction of
bimodal curve

 Compute %w/w composition of

final mixtures in A-B solutions
 Use densities for A, B, and C in A-
C solutions
 Using %w/w composition of final
mixtures, sketch binodal curve in
the Gibbs-Roozeboom diagram

After sketching
binodal curve

 Prepare four 100g mixtures with A-B-C as found

within the two phase region in ternary diagram

Note: Choose compositions which will give approximately

equal volumes of the conjugate phases when prepared.
Separatory Funnel
Separatory Funnel

 Equilibrate each mixture at 25 °C

 Separate conjugate phases and
transfer to Erlenmeyer flask.

E. flask with
conjugate phase

 Cover and label properly

 Use pycnometer to measure the density of conjugate
bases

250-mL E. flask

 Pipette 5-mL aliquot of each phase

 Titrate using 1.0 M NaOH until phenolphthalein end
point (faint pink)

Note: Values for upper and lower phase should not be

interchanged.
