Course Overview
In this course, students will build on their knowledge of geometric figures by learning and applying new
properties and characteristics to these figures. Students will be introduced to the axiomatic system of postulates,
theorems, and proofs that is the foundation of mathematics. Most importantly, this course is meant to improve
logical reasoning and problem-solving skills. The following topics will be covered:

Unit/Topic Subtopics Cycle

Unit 1: Intro to Geometric figures & notation, conditional statements, 1
Geometry, Logic, and two-column, and paragraph proofs, Geometric
Parallel Lines, Constructions and special segments in triangles
Constructions
Unit 2: Parallel Lines Slope, equations of lines, angles formed by 2
transversals, proving lines parallel, flow-chart proofs,
more constructions, Non-Euclidean Geometry
(spherical and hyperbolic Geometry)
Unit 3: Triangle Triangle congruence methods, two-column & flow- 2
Congruence and chart proofs, isosceles triangles, special segments in

plane transformation notation of translations, reflections,
rotations, and dilations
Unit 5: Similarity and Similar triangles, triangle proportionality, geometric

Supplies (See the school store)

 Spiral notebook or composition notebook or  Pencil(s) and Eraser
section in binder for notes  Highlighter(s)
 Section of binder or folder for handouts  Graphing calculator (recommended: TI-84 Plus CE)

Students are expected to bring their laptop, calculator, notebook, and writing utensils to class daily. Failure to
bring the necessary materials will result in a lunch detention after three offenses.
Calculator Policy:
It is the policy of the Math and Science department at Kinder HSPVA that each student bring a calculator to class
each day. Should you not own one, please purchase one (TI-84 preferred) or speak with your teacher to receive an
application for a loaner or scholarship calculator for the school year.

Cell Phone Policy

In accordance with school policy, cell phones should be off and out of sight unless specifically stated by the
teacher. If a cell phone sounds, or if a student is actively using a cell phone during class, the cell phone will be
collected and taken to the main office. The student or parent will be required to pay a fee to recover the cell
phone. If a student’s cell phone is visible or being used during a quiz or test, this will be considered cheating and
the student will receive a 0 in the grade book*. (*See note about academic integrity)

Classroom Expectations
• Student arrives to class promptly and prepared with the required materials
• Student follows directions and works collaboratively
• Student is always respectful to self and others
• Student completes all assignments and assessments honestly

Grading
15% Homework
20% Classwork/Projects
25% Quizzes
40% Celebrations of Learning (Tests)

Homework
Homework provides a daily check for understanding and should be taken seriously. It will mostly be
assigned through the online textbook, but occasionally may be a physical handout. Homework may be
graded for accuracy or completion, but should always include the work shown. Even if it is submitted
through an online platform, students must also show their thinking in a spiral/notebook. No work = No
credit. It is the policy of the Kinder HSPVA math department that no late homework is accepted.
However, at the end of each grading cycle the lowest homework grade is dropped.

Classwork/Projects
This category consists of two different types of grades:
- Classwork: anything assigned in class. In addition, students may have a “notebook check”
periodically. Students are expected to take notes in their notebook (spiral) during class.
- Projects: students will be provided with a rubric for any projects assigned. Projects could
include work outside of classroom time.

Quizzes
There will be frequent quizzes that check for understanding over material learned the previous class.
These quizzes will be short and could be open-note or closed-note as noted in advance. The best way to
prepare for quizzes is to keep your notes up-to-date and to review them while you complete your
homework.

Celebrations of Learning
Students should remember that gaining knowledge and understanding is something to be celebrated, not
feared! That is why after every unit, students will “celebrate” their learning by demonstrating mastery and
application of the new topics they have worked hard to understand.
Retake Opportunities
If a student fails a Celebration of Learning, they will have one opportunity to retake. The final grade will be the
average of the first attempt and the retake, whether up or down. Students are required to correct their original test
before they can retake. Retake opportunities will occur shortly after the original exam and publicized in class.

Tutorials
Tutorials will be offered before school (7:15-7:45am) and during lunch in Room 217, unless specifically changed
by the teacher. You can find Ms. Coffey’s tutorial calendar on her website. In addition, NHS offers tutoring for
any student— see teacher for more information. A great resource for reviewing material learned in class is
khanacademy.org, which can be found on the HUB in “Digital Resources” under the Resources tab.

Academic Integrity
Academic honesty is an integral component of a student's education. All graded academic exercises, including
homework, quizzes, tests, essays, research papers and projects, are expected to be conducted individually and
completed as the student’s original work unless otherwise instructed. If a student is caught cheating, he/she will
automatically receive a zero and will have one opportunity to retake the assignment, which will be averaged with
the original 0. In addition, the student shall receive a “P” in conduct for that marking period and an administrative
referral.

Absences
It is the student’s responsibility to make up any work missed. If a student is aware of an upcoming event that will
cause an absence, they should email their teachers as soon as possible. All course materials will be available on
Ms. Coffey’s website. Students will have two days to submit make-up homework or classwork from the day they
were absent. This applies only if a student is absent on the day they have Geometry.
If a student misses a Celebration of Learning due to an absence, they will need to take it in class upon their return
and make up any classwork missed while they were testing.

Late Work
Homework:
As stated previously, “It is the policy of the Kinder HSPVA math department that no late homework is
accepted. However, at the end of each grading cycle the lowest homework grade is dropped.”
Classwork/Projects:
Any late classwork and/or projects will be deducted 10 points per day. However, no late classwork and/or projects
may be accepted after the Wednesday before the end of the Six Weeks Grading Cycle. This deadline is intended
to provide teachers with a protected period of time to complete all grading and posting of grades prior to the cycle
deadline.
Please note that “late work” is not the same as “make-up work”. A student may submit “make-up work” only if
they were absent.

Accommodations and Modifications

Documented accommodations or modifications for students filed with the Kinder HSPVA office will be
supported in this course. For policies listed in this syllabus, they will be adjusted according to the filed
documentation.
