A Semi-detailed Lesson Plan in English –Grammar

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students must be able to:
a. differentiate preposition of time from preposition of place;
b. construct sentences using prepositions;
c. share ideas through group activity; and
d. use the appropriate preposition from the given sentences.

Directions: Pictures will be shown to the students. Through the pictures shown, the
teacher will ask them a question, where is the ball?

What is Preposition?
- Preposition is a word that usually put before a noun, pronoun, which is specify place,
direction and time.
- Preposition is a word that relates a noun or a pronoun to another in the sentence

IN, ON and AT as Preposition of Time and Place

EXAMPLES: Prepositions of Time

The preposition IN is used in the following descriptions of time:

With months, years, seasons, and longer periods of time:


 I was born in 1965.
 We’re going to visit them in May.
 They managed to finish the job in two weeks.

The preposition ON is used in the following descriptions of time:

With days of the week, and parts of days of the week:


 She usually works on Mondays.
 We’re going to the theatre on Wednesday evening.

The preposition AT is used in the following descriptions of time:


With clock times:
 The last train leaves at 10:30.
 We left at midnight.
EXAMPLES: Prepositions of Place

The preposition IN is used in the following descriptions of place/position:

With countries:
 Driving in France is very straightforward.
 We’ve been in Canada

With cities, towns and larger areas:


 They were having a picnic in the park.
 Shoes were displayed in Marikina City.

The preposition ON is used in the following descriptions of place/position:

With roads/streets
 Anapolis is on EDSA.
 It’s the second turning on the left.
With surfaces, or things that can be thought of as surfaces:
 The letter is on my desk.
 There was a beautiful painting on the wall.

The preposition AT is used in the following descriptions of place/position:

With specific places/points in space:


 Angie’s still at home.
 Write your name at the top of each page.
With addresses:
 I live at Bagong Silang St. Parang Marikina City

C. Generalization
Preposition of time and place differs in function but matches on their purpose.

D. Application (Group Activity)


Directions: The class will be divided into five (5) groups. Each group will receive a
picture. Using the pictures, the groups will write at least (2) sentences using
prepositions. Then, a representative of the group will present.

E. Evaluation
I. Directions: Complete the invitation below. Fill in the spaces with IN, ON or AT.

It’s going to start ________ 5 o’clock ________ the afternoon ________ the second Saturday
________ August. We’re going to have it in Tom’s house on Wilton Avenue. There’s a big garden and
we’re going to have the party in the garden.

Did you know that my birthday is ________ the eighth? But as you can see, the party is going to be
________ the tenth. Why? Parties are better ________ the weekend!
II. Directions: Choose the correct preposition in the sentence.

V. Assignment

On a whole sheet of paper, cut and paste picture. Then, write sentences about the picture using
prepositions.
