Khairul : Hi, Subra. Have you heard about the legend of Mahsuri?

Subra : I only know that it is a Langkawi Island legend. Do yu know more


about it?

Khairul : From what I know, Mahsuri was a beautiful maiden who lived
during the Reign of Sultan Abdullah Mukarram Shah II who ruled
Kedah between 1752 and 1800. Sadly, she died for a crime that
she did not commit.

Subra : What happened to her?

Khairul : A woman named Mahura was jealous of Mahsuri’s beauty.

Mahsuri : Married Mahura’s son, Mat Deris, and eventually gave birth to a
baby boy. Mahura got even jealous so she accused Mahsuri that
the baby boy belonged to Deramang, a young performer she
befriend.

Subra : That is terrible! What happened later?

Khairul : The chieftain of Langkawi who was also Mahsuri’s father-in-law,


Dato Karma Jaya, believed the accusation and sentenced Mahsuri
to death without proper investigation.

Subra : This is very unfortunate for Mahsuri. I wonder if they found out
she was innocent.

Khairul : It was said that as a proof of innocence, white blood was seen
gushing out of her wound during execution at Padang Mat Sirat.
She also cursed Langkawi that it would not prosper for seven
generations because of the act of injustice.

Subra : That is a very interesting legend. I would like to go to Langkawi


Island one day see where this legend had taken place.

Read the story below and answer the questions that follow.

Once upon a time, there was a mouse deer wandering in the jungle. It
was looking for food as it was hungry. As it was walking along the river, it
spotted some fruits hanging on the trees across the river.
The fruits were ripe enough to be eaten. The mouse deer wanted to cross
the river but the current was too strong. The mouse deer could be easily
swept away by the water. Moreover, there were many crocodiles in the
water waiting to prey on the mouse deer.
Being known for its intelligence, the mouse deer came up with an idea to
trick the crocodiles. It said, “Hello crocodiles, King Sulaiman sent me to
count the number of animals in the river. He is preparing a feast for all the
animals in the jungle. Please line up so I can count how many crocodiles
are in the river.
The crocodiles then lined up and the mouse deer jumped on top of the
crocodiles to cross the river. The crocodiles were very angry when they
found out that they were tricked by the clever mouse deer.
