I. Introduction
Statement of the Problem
As of 2017, according to the Department of
Health, an alarming number of over two million
people nationwide are blind or suffering from poor
vision. Out of these 332,150 people in the country
are bilaterally blind meanwhile 2,179,733 number
of individuals have bilateral low vision.
As with any disability, a correlation between
mental health and visual impairment can be
perceived. In an online article by Visionware,
mental health is said to be associated with acquired
blindness and has statistically been known to result
other issues such as anxiety, depression, phobias,
and even suicidal thoughts. One of the biggest
struggles that one with acquired blindness will
face is the loss of one’s independence.
Environmental, physical and social factors can be
a challenge as of prior to disability. In accord to
health experts, blindness or severe visual
impairment lead to decrease in functional ability,
loss of productivity and in general subsidizes the
decline of the individual’s everyday life. With the
number detriments affecting the lives of these
individuals; the progress of technology, research
and design has developed in consideration to these
factors.
II.
A house is often associated with shelter and
settlements. A more abstract concept describes the
house as place where most memories of an
individual’s life is made. It is much more than a
structure as it can define the everyday routine of
those under it.
Mr. Wilson S., a professional software engineer,
suffers from a visual impairment of Myopia. He
plans to marry his fiancé of 10 years and start a
family with her. He took it upon himself and
bought a beautiful 1400 square meter site that
oversees the City of Batangas and Taal Volcano.
Despite his disability, Mr. Wilson is a physically
active person. He enjoys swimming and working
out at the gym in order to maintain his fit physique.
Aside of physical activities, he finds enjoyment to
music as a karaoke fan. As a software engineer
who works mostly at home, he enjoys preparing
his snacks despite not cooking himself. As with
any disability, there are special needs that must be
catered towards him. Not wanting to burden his to
be family he aims to be as independent as possible,
obstinate in asking anyone for help.
