Before extending such experiments, however,
Francis would want to satisfy himself on two
counts. Firstly, could Bright, Hirst and Warhurst
all do the extra defensive work that 4-3-3 re-
quires of forwards? Secondly, would a three-
man Wednesday mid-field containing Waddle
and Sheridan have too much artistry and not
enough artisan labour, for all the tireless efforts
of Carlton Palmer?
REGRETS
Despite the difficulties, Francis will surely re-
gret it if he can't keep both Warhurst and Hirst.
The only team they should be scoring goals for
next season, apart from Wednesday, is England.
He has already paid Coventry £600,000 for
Andy Pearce to try to solve his centre-half prob-
lem,
This follows the departure of veteran Viv
Anderson, who has moved into management with
Barnsley, taking with him as player coach his
friend and Wednesday mid-fielder Danny Wilson.
Centre-half was Wednesday's weak link last
season following the unfortunate injury to Peter
Shirtliff and could again give Francis some head-
aches.
Obviously Wednesday will need to tighten up
in defence if they are to challenge for league and
cup honours.
The form of goalkeeper Chris Woods will be
crucial both for Wednesday and for England. On
his day Woods can be an inspiration but should
he lose his confidence Wednesday's title hopes
