LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE V

5Es INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING MODEL

I- OBJECTIVES: 1. Identify the materials that are good conductors of heat and electricity
2. Understand the importance of the different conductors of heat and
electricity
3. Participate group work activity
II- SUBJECT MATTER: CONDUCTORS OF HEAT AND ELECTRICITY
A. Process Skills:
Identifying, observing, describing, comparing, predicting

B. Value Focus: Importance of conductors and insulators in preventing

accident and fire

C. Reference: Science Beyond Borders 5 pp. 135-139 (S5FE-IIIC-3)

D. Materials: Pictures of different conductors and insulators, small flashlight bulb,

battery, 1 aluminium foil, adhesive tape – real objects, hot water and mug, comb, coin,
paper, paper clip, metal spoon

III-. LEARNING ACTIVITIES/PLAN

A. Engagement (Motivation)
1. Name some objects in your home and school which are run by electricity and heat.
2. How does electricity reach your homes?
3. How is heat produced in some of the object in your home?

B. Explore
1. The class will be group into two
2. I am going to distribute to you a package of materials and find out which among the
materials are good conductors of heat and electricity and which materials are non
conductor of heat and electricity.
3. Each group will perform the activities. Take note of your observation why does the
material is a good conductor of heat and electricity? And Why not?

Group A - Electricity Flow

1. Cut a part of the aluminum foil into three strips.
2. Fold or roll the strips until its diameter is similar to an electricity cord.
3. Tape one end of the first strip to the negative side of the battery.
4. Place the other end of the strip around the light bulb.
5. Tape one end of the second strip to the positive side of the battery and the third
strip around the light bulb.
6. Test your connection by bringing the free ends of the second and third strips
7. together. Adjust as necessary.
8. Once your circuit works, try testing the objects listed at the right if the bulb will
9. light up by making one side of the object touch the free end of the second strip
and the other side, the free end of the third strip.
10. Be sure to disconnect the circuit between each trial for a few seconds, and
especially if either the aluminum foil or battery begins to heat up.
11. Record your observations below.

Group B – Heat Flow
1. Put hot water in a mug. Be careful when experimenting with hot water.
2. Place all the objects in the mug.
3. After one minute, drain the water in the mug and get the objects.
4. Touch each object and record your observations in the table below.
5. Put a check (/) if the answer to the question is Yes and (x) if the answer to the
question is No.
Setup A Setup B
Object
Did the bulb light up? Did the objects become hot?
Coin
Copper wire
Comb
Metal spoon
Paper
Paper clip

C. Explain ( Reporting Output)

 Have pupils explain and present their group activities to the class
 The teacher give further explanation about the materials that are good conductor
of heat and electricity and introduce the term conductors and insulators.
 What materials are good conductors of heat and electricity?
D. Elaboration
1. Group activies
The class will be group into three. Each group will be given an activity.

Group I
Make a table of the differences between conductors and insulators. Provide five (5) examples
each.
Group II
Draw at least five(5) materials found in your house that are conductors.Give its charateristics

Group III
List down ten (10) materials that are conductors or insulators. Present your work to the class in a
form of rap.

2. Group Presentation
Each group will present their activity to the class.
3. Generalization
Which among the materials are good conductors of heat and electricity? What does this
show or prove?

Which among the materials are insulators of electricity and heat? What does this show or
prove?

What is the importance of conductors in the distribution of heat and electricity?

E. Evaluation

1. What do we call the materials that do not allow electric current to flow through them
a. conductor
b. insulator
c. electricity
2. __________ is the materials that allow electric current to flow through them easily?

a. conductor
b. insulator
c. electricity
3. The following materials use conductor of heat and electricity to function EXCEPT
one. Which is it?
a. lighted candle
b. lighted bulb
c. water heater
4. Which of the following group of materials are non-conductor of heat and electricity?
I. Leaf, chair, pencil, spoon
II. Tin can, iron nails, book
III. Sleeper, rubber bands, tire
IV. cloth, gold bar, wire, paper clip
a. I and II
b. III and IV
c. III only

5. Why is electrical wiring usually covered with a layer of plastic?

A. To help electricity flow along the wire
B. To make it look more beautiful.
C. To make it stronger.
D. To make it safe.
