SHIELDS
Completing shields

 Prepare the wires and cables for shield

ends.
 Make the shield ends in accordance with
the information given in the work
documents.
Shields
Utility

 The shields are used to protect:

 Wiring against magnetic fields;
 Against exterior interference.

The shield insulates certain parts of the wiring

preventing waves from interfering
with the electric signals.
Shield
 Copper shield finish plated with:
 Silver (bright grey)

 Nickel
(yellow tainted grey)

 Tin (flat grey)

Shield preparation Self-soldering sleeve

 Preparation main steps:

 Strip the plastic insulation
on a length of 4“maximum
using an appropriate tool;

 Push the shield so that it forms

a disk;
 The disk must be about ¼"
away from the insulation.
Shield preparation
Self-soldering sleeve

 Using wire cutters, cut the metallic disk , then remove

the shield excess;
 The rest of the shield must have a length between ¼" and 5/16".

 Fold shield over insulation.

Self-soldering sleeve
Installation

 Place the self-soldering sleeve on the wires:

 The soldering ring and the wire must be aligned
with the shield.
 Melt the solder in the middle of the sleeve, as well
as the insulation on both ends:
 Use the heat gun carefully.
Self soldering sleeve
Replacement

 Replace a damaged self-soldering sleeve:

 heat the sleeve so that insulation
softens on both ends;
 use a pair of pliers to remove
the damaged sleeve.

Do not melt solder in the middle of sleeve.

Avoid damaging wire insulation.
Preparation of replacement sleeve
 Flatten the soldering ring in the middle of the sleeve.
Sleeve installation
Solderless

 Place the solderless sleeve on the wires.

 Center the sleeve with the existing solder.
 Heat the insulation rings on each end of the sleeve.
 Make sure the insulation seals properly the wires.
Shield preparation
Floating wire

 Prepare the wire as previously shown, that is:

 Strip 3” to 4” of the insulation;
 Be careful not to damage the shield
 Push the shield so that it forms a disk;
 Using wire cutters, cut the metallic disk, then remove the shield excess;
 Fold the shield over the insulation.
Shrinking sheath
Installation on a floating wire

 Slide the wire into the shrinking sheath:

 Position the sheath in the centre;
 leave about ¼" on each side of the shield.
Shrinking sheath
Installation on a floating wire

 Heat the shrinking sheath using a heat gun:

 The shrinking sheath must take on the exact shape of the shield and
wires.
Shield preparation
Pigtail

 Prepare the wire:

 Strip 4” maximum of the insulation;
 Be careful not to damage the shield;
 Push the shield so that it forms a disk;
 Using a pointed tool, spread the shield braids;
 Take the wires out through
the opening.
Installation of a terminal
Pigtail

 With wire:
 Insert a wire inside the shield;
 Observe the instructions in the work documents.

 Solder the wire to the shield:

 Only CERTIFIED personnel is authorized to perform electrical soldering
operations.
Shrinking sheath Installation on a
pigtail

 Insert a shrinking sheath on the shield / wire assembly.

 Make sure the sheath overlaps the wire insulation;
 Heat each tube using a heat gun;
 Make sure all stripped parts are completely insulated.
Self-soldering sleeve
Checkpoints

 The sleeve solder is aligned with the shield;

 The folding of the shield is ¼" (except “Flat braid”);
 The sleeve wire is aligned on the shield;
 The softening and bonding of solder must be uniform;
 The strands are visible;
 The soldering quantity is sufficient (melted ring);
 The sleeve is not cracked, punched or blackened;
 The insulation properly seals each end of the sleeve.
Shrinking sheath
Checkpoints

 The folding of shield conforms to specifications;

 The shrinking sheath is centred on the shield;
 The shrinking sheath overlaps the cable insulation.
Pigtail
Checkpoints

 Type of wire or cable insulation (heat sensitive);

 The wire soldering conforms to specifications
(CERTIFIED personnel only);
 The shrinking sheath overlaps cable insulation.
