Mary Joy: The rising prices of goods can be attributed to excise tax imposed on fuel under

Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) law, senatorial candidates

said.

During ABS-CBN’s “Harapan 2019” senatorial town hall debates, the aspirants

were asked what they can do to address inflation. Marawi civic leader Samira

Gutoc suggested reviewing or even suspending the excise tax under the Train

law.

Former broadcast journalist Jiggy Manicad agreed that excise tax fuel has

affected basic commodities.

The re-electionist senator warned that there is an impending P2-increase on

excise tax in 2020, which should be stopped.

Hayanna: At least 10 houses were destroyed when a fire of unknown origin struck a

residential area in Sta. Ana, Manila on Saturday night.

Senior Inspector Lucio Albaracin, chief of the Manila Bureau of Fire Protection,

said the blaze started at a shop along Obrero street, Barangay Punta at around

10:47 p.m.

The fire reached the second alarm before it was declared under control at past

1 a.m. yesterday.

Damage to property was placed at P400,000. Arson probers said they have yet

to determine if the fire was caused by a faulty wiring or an appliance left

unplugged.

Haira: The reserve in Metro Manila’s main water source, Angat Dam, may dip to critical

level during the first semester of this year due to the possible onslaught of

the El Niño phenomenon.

Edgar dela Cruz,a hydrologist of Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and

Astronomical Services Administration said that the level of Angat’s reserve

was at the 214.12 meter mark last February 12.

the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup, as they head to the final window of the FIBA

World Cup Qualifier.

RR Pogoy, June Mar Fajardo, Jayson Castro, Japeth Aguilar and Marcio

Lassiter are all in the Top 10 in scoring; Fajardo and Scottie Thompson

are two of only four players averaging double-double numbers, and Poy

Erram, Raymond Almazan and Fajardo are the top three in blocks.

Nine Gilas players average in double figures in scoring, and only four don’t.

Almazan and Gabe Norwood are really not expected to score much as the

latter is more of a rebounder and rim protector while the former is primarily

a perimeter defender.

Struggling a bit are Paul Lee and Mark Barroca as their team the Magnolia

Hotshots are just back into action after a title run in the recent Governors

Cup.

Haira: After her 2018 Victoria’s Secret Fashion show stint, Filipina-American model

Kelsey Merritt was recently graced the cover of American sports magazine

‘Sports Ilustrated Swimsuit 2019’ as their rookie model.

Merritt auditioned for the swimsuit issue of Sports Ilustrated last October, a

month before she made history as the first Filipino to walk the Victoria’s

Secret Fashion show runway.

During her casting call posted by Sports Ilustrated Swimsuit in October,

Merritt said she wanted to pose for the magazine because she loves how |

confident the models are.

Merritt has been residing in New York City to pursue her modeling career.
