2. Terzaghi's method

One of the early sets of bearing capacity equations was proposed by Terzaghi (1943) as belows.

strip : q(ult) = c Nc + q Nq + 0.5 r1 B Nr

square : q(ult) = (1+0.3 B/L) c Nc + q Nq + (0.5-0.1 B/L) r1 B Nr

round : q(ult) = 1.3 c Nc + q Nq + 0.3 r1 B Nr

where, Nc = (Nq-1) cot f, Nc=5.7 for f =0

2 2
Nq = a /[2 cos (45+f/2)]

Nr = 2(Nq+1) tanf / [1+0.4sin(4f)] by Coduto(2001)

a = exp[(0.75 p-f/2) tanf]

r1 = average effective unit weight underneath the foundation

q = r2 Df

r2 = average effective unit weight above the foundation

Df = embedment depth of the foundation

c = cohesion of the soil underneath the foundation

B = width of the foundation

3. Meyerhof's method

Meyerhof proposed a bearing capacity equation similar to that of Terzaghi but added shape factors, depth factors, and inclination factors.

Vertical Load : q(ult) = c Nc sc dc + q Nq sq dq + 0.5 r1 B' Nr sr dr

Inclined Load : q(ult) = c Nc sc ic + q Nq sq iq + 0.5 r1 B' Nr sr ir

where, Nc = (Nq-1) cotf, Nc = 5.14 for f = 0

2
Nq = tan (45+f/2) exp(p tanf)

Nr = (Nq-1) tan(1.4 f)

r1 = average effective unit weight underneath the foundation

q = r2 Df

r2 = average effective unit weight above the foundation

Df = embedment depth of the foundation

c = cohesion of the soil underneath the foundation

B = effective width of the foundation
