A Reflection Paper on DRRR/ DRRM Symposium

“Readiness on Disaster and Risk for Real Change”

Disasters are the results of a hazard/ hazards coming into contact with humans in
vulnerable position. And as what the speakers told us earlier, the disasters that we experienced
right now is caused by what we called climate change. Because of that climate change, the
School Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Coordinator planned to have a symposium that
tackles about Disaster Awareness and Readiness in our school which is the Doña Hortencia Salas
Benedicto National High School. The speakers highlight some importance of Disaster and Risk
Reduction Management in the development processes such as agriculture, water, energy, health,
education, and etc.

The first speaker tackled about dengue. I learned that dengue is a type of virus that
caused by mosquitoes. The types of mosquitoes which are the source of dengue virus are Aedes
Aegypti and Aedes Albopictus. They carry the virus and go to the host to pass the virus. I learned
also on how to help the community in avoiding the dengue and that is the 4’S; Search and
destroy, self protection measure, seek early treatment and say yes to fogging.

Another speaker tackled about illegal drugs. She stated why people are using illegal drugs
and it is because of family problems, lack of confidence, pressure/ curiosity and boredom/
frustration. She also discusses the different illegal drugs such as shabu, marijuana, solvent and
etc. I infer that these kinds of drugs are not the best solution for their problems. There is some
other way to surpass and forget those things that bothers into their mind.

The next one is the fire. I taught a lot of things in this session just like what to do in case
of fire. If you see a fire burning all things in your surroundings, alert others and evacuate. Try to
use the emergency exit and leave. Take note that we should always stay at low elevation. I also
learned on how to use a fire extinguisher. There is an acronym on how to use a fire extinguisher
and that is T P A S S. T stands for twisting the pin, P for pulling the pin in the handle, A for
aiming the nozzle at the base of the fire, S for squeezing of lever slowly and another S for sweep
from side to side. Lastly, the fire preparation starts in our home.

The last topic that was tackled by the speaker was all about potential hazards during
volcanic eruptions. She discussed about the effect of volcanic eruption in community within the
space or boundary of vulnerability. We already know that La Carlota is one of the cities that are
located near the base line of Canlaon Volcano. It reflects that this kind of topic will help us as La
Carloteños since we are also one of the cities that may experience hazards in this island due to
the eruption of Canlaon Volcano.

To summarize and pack up this reflection paper, all of the topics presented have one main
point or thought, it is to be prepared in any disasters and hazards and disaster response. The
disaster prevention and mitigation, disaster preparedness, disaster recovery and rehabilitation can
lead to attainment of the goals of Disaster and Risk Reduction Management if we put it together.
We cannot stop or eliminate natural and manmade disaster but we can arm ourselves with
knowledge, so many lives would not have to be lost if there was enough disaster preparedness
and readiness. “It wasn’t raining when Noah build the ark.”
