Perforated Stainless Steel and Aluminum Profiles 40% Free Area

[NOTE: This Technical Bulletin replaces TB-01-06]

This Technical Bulletin will provide load / span information, fastener

recommendations, and manufacturing specifications for EcoScreen perforated screen
walls and accent panels in stainless steel and aluminum. Testing has been
conducted on several perforated stainless steel and aluminum profiles. A design
approach based on this testing, as well as industry accepted procedures, has been
used to develop the enclosed load / span data.

Materials

Stainless Steel- The material to be used for stainless steel perforated panels is
20 ga. Type 304 stainless steel with 2B finish and a minimum yield strength of 38.0
KSI. Stainless steel screenwall or accent panels are intended to satisfy requests for
an unpainted metallic look when longer panel spans are required, or when a Cradle
to Cradle Gold Certification is required.

Ø Available Profiles:
o Econolap ¾”
o BR5-36
o Style Rib
o MR3-36
o Concept Series CS-260 and CS-660
o Cascade CC-260

Aluminum—The material to be used for aluminum-perforated panels is 0.040”
aluminum 3003-H14 (non-clad) alloy. Aluminum screenwall or accent panels are
intended to satisfy requests for a painted product. (Unpainted aluminum panels are
not recommended because they will develop visible oxidation on the panel surface).
Material for perforated aluminum panels is perforated after painting; therefore, the
inside surfaces of the perforations will not be painted.

Ø Available Profiles
o Econolap ¾”
o BR5-36
o Style Rib
o MR3-36
o Concept Series CS-260 and CS-660
o Cascade CC-260

Fasteners

For both stainless steel and aluminum panels, use ¼-14 300-series stainless
steel screws with 5/8” diameter combination washers to fasten panels to supports.
For sidelaps, use the following fasteners at 18” maximum on center:

Aluminum panels: Aluminum Bulb-Tite rivet, 9/32” diameter

(Olympic part # RV6605-9-6W, CENTRIA # 100388).

Stainless steel panels: FAB-LOK rivet (stainless steel/ aluminum,

part # FAC-10-4).

Pullover testing has been conducted on 40% perforated (3/8” diameter at 9/16”
on center) material, using ¼-14 stainless steel screws with 5/8” diameter combination
washers.
In stainless steel, the average ultimate pullover strength is 1467#. This value
is high enough that fastener pullover will not control the design for the panel profiles
covered by this bulletin.
In aluminum, the average ultimate pullover strength is 418#. This value will
limit some of the spans for aluminum-perforated panels.

CS-260, CS-660 and CC-260 are available in both stainless and aluminum, and must
be installed with exposed fasteners.

Load / span tables are attached for .040 aluminum:

MR3-36 using 6 fasteners per panel (two (2) in each low cell)
Style Rib & BR5-36 – 5 fasteners per panel (one in each low cell)
Econolap ¾- 3 fasteners per panel.
Concept Series CS-260, CS-660 and CC-260 - 2 fasteners per panel
For the 12" panel the fasteners will be located in the low cells on either side of the side
joint. For the 16" panels the fasteners will be located in the first and third low cells when
installing the panel left to right or bottom to top.
NOTE: This is an increase over the standard fastening for non-perforated panels.

Load / span tables are attached for 20GA stainless steel:
MR3-36, Style Rib, BR5-36 and Econolap ¾- 3 fasteners per panel.

For the 12" panel the fasteners will be located in the low cells on either side of the side
joint. For the 16" panels the fasteners will be located in the first and third low cells when
installing the panel left to right or bottom to top.

Perforation Pattern

The perforation pattern for these screenwall panels consists of 3/8” diameter
holes at 9/16” on center (staggered) resulting in 40% open area. (See graphical
representation of the pattern above). The interior face of panel is always the “burr
side” for aluminum and stainless steel panels. This burr side will have sharp edges
for the stainless steel panels, and should not be used where people may come into
contact with this surface. However, the burrs on aluminum are minor in nature.
The cut ends of panels may have sharp edges and should be covered with
flashing at all times. At base conditions, the panel ends should rest on a base
flashing.
Additional perforation patterns are available as outlined in the attached
Product Manager's Memo PMPROF06.00-028- contained in this bulletin.
NOTE that perforation pattern #6 (1/8" holes @ 3/16" o/c- 40%) is not
available in Style Rib, BR5-36 or MR3-36 when using a stainless steel substrate.
Aluminum is acceptable for this pattern in all profiles.
For pricing and availability of these optional patterns please contact the pricing
team. For load span tables, contact Design and Development.

Manufacturing and Application

Stainless steel screenwall panels are recommended where longer spans, a

Cradle to Cradle Gold Certification is required or an unpainted metallic surface is
desired. Aluminum screenwall panels typically have a painted exposed surface.
All stainless steel perforated profiles will be provided with a strippable film
(Nitto) from the Stainless Steel supplier on the exterior side. The "burr side" will be
the interior side. All painted aluminum perforated profiles will either have a shop-
applied strippable film, if specified for the project, or a plastic interleaf applied in the
Frankfort Plant to protect the product during shipping. All painted and perforated
aluminum coils will be paper-interleafed by the perforator. A disclaimer will be

included on all orders that some minor scratching may occur and will not be cause for
rejection.
Because of the large hole size, the strippable film may be difficult to remove in
the field. The erector should include labor for this work in his bid.

with the 2010 State of Florida Building Code. This approval is for
NON-HVHZ zones. Supports for EcoScreen in Florida must be 12
gage minimum. Aluminum EcoScreen panels for BR5-36 and MR3-
36 in 0.040" aluminum with 40% perforation are approved for use in
Florida for non-HVHZ as well.
