A STUDY ON JOB SATISFACTION AMONG SELF-

FINANCING COLLEGE TEACHERS WITH SPECIAL


REFERENCE TO PALAKKAD DISTRICT

INTRODUCTION
Job satisfaction is the state of feelings towards the job undertaken by an employee either
positively or negatively. Job satisfaction is a pleasurable emotional state resulting from the
appraisal of one’s job.

Indian Education Commission (1966) describes teacher as one of the most important
factors contributing to the national development. The best system of education may fail to achieve
the desire ends in the absence of sincere, competent and professionally aware teachers.

Effective teachers are required since education is basically the influence which the teacher
exerts on the students entrusted to his care. Hence retention of high quality teachers becomes
important and factor behind the retention of the good teacher is job satisfaction.

Job satisfaction consists of total body of feeling towards the nature of job, promotion and
of supervision etc. that an individual has in his job. These studies dealt with job satisfaction and
the factors which affect job satisfaction such as, salary, gender, school administration, and
counselling, working conditions mostly in schools, Government Colleges and University. Hence
the present thesis attempts to study the job satisfaction among the teaching faculty of self-financing
Arts and Science Colleges with special reference to Palakkad district in Kerala.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Job satisfaction is a set of feeling, thought, emotion and intentions with which the workers
view their work. Since 1993 there have been a number of mushrooming self-financing Arts and
Science Colleges in India after the introduction of the new economic policy.

It is indispensable to understand the level of Job satisfaction of employees and the teaching
faculty of self-financing colleges, because the level of job satisfaction attained by employees
would help to frame strategies not only to improve the satisfaction level but also for the efficient
practice of privatization policy. Palakkad is the prominent district in Kerala where 45 self-
financing Arts and Science colleges apart from other aided colleges across 13 districts. Therefore
it has been chosen to study job satisfaction among the teaching faculty of self-financing Arts and
Science Colleges in Palakkad district.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY


1. To study the Job satisfaction level among the teaching faculty towards the
workplace conditions of the self-financing Arts and Science Colleges in Palakkad district.

2. To know the job satisfaction level among the teaching faculty towards the
compensation of the self-financing Arts and Science Colleges in Palakkad district.

3. To understand the job satisfaction level among the teaching faculty towards the
Infrastructure of the self-financing Arts and Science Colleges in Palakkad district.

4. To analyze the job satisfaction level among the teaching faculty towards the
professional development of self-financing Arts and Science Colleges in Palakkad district.

5. To offer suggestions for improved job satisfaction level of teaching faculty


working in Self-financing Arts & Science Colleges in Palakkad district.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
There are 45 self-financing arts and science colleges in Palakkad district. The total number
of teaching faculty employed in all these 45 self-financing colleges is more than 2000. This study
is designed to collect primary data from a sample size of 200 respondents, which is 10% of the
universe, who are selected under proportionate stratified simple random sampling techniques.

RESEARCH DESIGN
A research design is the arrangement of conditions for collection and analysis of data in a
manner that aims to combine relevance to the research purpose with economy in procedure.
Regarding this project, descriptive research design concern with describing the perception of each
individuals or narrating facts on welfare measures and diagnostic design helps in determine the
frequency with which something occurs or it is associated with something else. These two research
design help in understand the characteristic in a given situation. Think systematically about aspects
in given situation, offers idea for probe and research help to make certain simple decision.

DESCRIPTIVE RESEARCH
In this research it deals with descriptive research type. It includes surveys and fact-finding
enquiries of different kinds. The major purpose of descriptive research is description of the state
of affairs as it exists at present.

SAMPLE DESIGN
A sample design is a definite plan determined before any data are actually collected for
obtaining a sample from a given population. Sampling is used to collect data from limited numbers
whereas census is used for large numbers. For the research, sampling method was used.

SAMPLING METHOD
In this research convenient sampling method is used to collect the primary data using
questionnaire.

DATA COLLECTION METHOD

 PRIMARY SOURCE OF DATA


Primary data is known as the data collected for the first time through field survey. Such data are
collected with specific set of objectives to assess the current status of any variable studied. Primary
data’s are collected through questionnaire and direct interview with the respondents

 SECONADRY SOURCE OF DATA

Secondary data refers to data that was collected by someone other than the user. Common
sources of secondary data for social science include censuses, information collected by
government departments, organizational records and data that was originally collected for other
research purposes.
SAMPLE SIZE
Sample size denotes the number of elements selected for the study. The sample size of the study is 200
respondents.

DATA ANALYSIS TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES USED

The researcher had applied the relevant statistical tools to analyze the multivariate variable
by using chi square test, mean, standard deviation, cross tabulation, student ‘t’ Test, One – way
ANOVA, Inter correlated matrix correlation, and five point scale measurement in order to find out
the qualitative degree of relationship existing between measures of different categories. Besides
percentage analysis is made to show the results with the help of pictographic presentation.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study covers the analysis of job satisfaction level attained by teaching faculty of self-
financing Arts and Science Colleges in Palakkad district. This study considers four dimensions
namely workplace conditions, compensation, infrastructure and professional development for
evaluating the level of job satisfaction attained by teaching faculty. Under the workplace
conditions there are six variable and the rest of the three dimensions there are four variable each
to extract the job satisfaction level of the teaching faculty.

LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

1. This study ignores the self-financing Arts and Science courses offered by Aided Colleges
and Government Colleges in Palakkad district.

2. This study is restricted to teaching faculty only, and does not include non-teaching staff
members of self-financing Arts and Science colleges

3. The application of the present study cannot be substantiated with other colleges
operating in the different states and other places.
