HW 1 - – Due June 3, 2015 -

TA responsible: AT/KA, Office hours: Wednesday 9:30 – 11:30 am, Rm 428 Eng1

(Read examples 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 and 4.4.)

1. The diameter of a bolt, D, was found to be normally distributed for a large sample size (N > 10,000). The mean and standard
deviation of the diameter were 4.5 mm and 1.0 mm, respectively. Determine the range of values (centered around the mean
diameter) containing:
a) 50% of the diameter population (show the corresponding z values).
b) 95% of the diameter population (show the corresponding z values).

2. For a very large data set and fixed operating conditions, the line pressure downstream of a reciprocating compressor has a mean
value of 13.0 bar with a standard deviation of 1.0 bar. Assuming normal distribution, what is the probability that the line pressure
will exceed 14.0 bar during any measurement?

3. The table below shows 3 sets of the measured pressure in a compressed air vessel, in kPa. Calculate the mean, median and
standard deviation of the pressure for each set separately.

Set1 54.4 53.5 53.8 53.1 54.5 53.5 52.4 54.0 54.4 55.9 54.8 54.2 55.5 52.9 53.2 54.0 54.2 52.9 53.4 52.7
Set2 54.4 51.2 54.6 55.2 53.4 52.3 56.0 55.2 54.8 56.1 52.9 53.8 53.8 53.7 54.4 55.6 52.8 54.2 54.0 53.2
Set3 53.6 52.6 54.9 54.0 53.2 55.1 54.5 53.0 55.9 53.0 55.1 52.9 54.3 54.3 53.7 53.6 55.8 52.4 53.9 55.0

4. Calculate the true mean pressure for each data set (in the table above) separately, at a probability of 95%.

5. Plot the histogram of each data set separately.

a) Choose a proper number of bins/intervals for the histogram. (Choose the same intervals and data range and for all sets)
b) Count and show how many points in each interval.
c) Comment on the similarity and differences among the 3 histograms.
d) If the data came from the same process, why the histogram may vary?
e) Does the data show central tendency?

6. The horsepower of two small engine designs was measured and saved in a data file (uploaded to webcourses). The first half of
the data points came from the first engine while the second half came from the second engine.
a) Plot a histogram of the whole data set. (choose a proper number of bins)
b) Calculate the mean, standard deviation, and the mode(s) for the whole set.
c) Calculate the true mean for the whole set (P=95%).
Now separate the data for each of the 2 engine designs.
d) Calculate the mean and standard deviation for each engine separately (choose a proper number of bins).
e) Does the data from the 2 engines overlap (i.e., some of the 1st engine design have higher horsepower than the 2nd design,
and vice versa).
f) Calculate the true mean horsepower for each design separately (P=95%).
g) Are these means more meaningful than the mean of combined engine data?
h) Draw the approximate shape of the box and whiskers plot for each design in the same graph (no exact data values are
required).
