Welcome to the JCI Philippines OTI Module!

This is a modified version of the OTI Module released via jci.cc

This module was designed to better introduce the organization to potential members
with little to no knowledge of JCI as an organization. Here we have simplified some
concepts that were more comprehensively discussed in the jci.cc OTI module in order
to be able to explain what JCI is to an individual with out overwhelming them with
terms and jargons commonly used by more experienced members of the
organization.
Welcome your participants and reassure them that they are welcome in the
organization.

Make sure that all participants are already settled in the room and seated
comfortably before you start your session.
At this point, it is important for the to assign chapter officers to take note of the
answers of each participant being oriented for their respective chapters. (coordinate
this with the host chapters ahead of time so, you don’t need to remind them to take
notes during introductions)

Knowing the answers to these questions is key to getting to know your potential
member, who they are comfortable communicating with, why they are interested in
the organization and the kinds of activities that will motivate them into being active
members of your chapters!

The trainer can start asking follow up questions to get to the bottom of the
motivation of each participant to be interested in the organization, this can also be
key to some further discussion points in the course of the orientation to make sure
that the participant will be engaged and interested in the organization.

Introduce yourself in an upbeat manner while also describing what made you decide
to join JCI. This is a way to transition into the choice that brought the attendees to
your presentation.

"Life is all about choices and those that we make in a split second determine our
destiny and our roles; at home, in the work place and in society. Deciding to be here
today, you have made a choice, a choice you will not regret but also one that will
transform your life, your community, your country and the world at large.”
Objectives Briefly explain the course objectives: At the end of this course, participants
should be able to:

• Discover JCI’s rich history and how the vision of one man inspired millions of young
people around the world to create positive change
• The beliefs and philosophy of JCI and hundreds of thousands of young active
citizens around the world
• How JCI creates positive change around the world
• How you can join the movement and why you should get involved with JCI!

Feel free to ask those in the audience if they have any expectations for the
presentation. Briefly explain how those objectives will be met throughout the
orientation
JCI is a worldwide community of young people who share the belief that in order to
create lasting positive change, we must improve ourselves and the world around us.
Nearly 200,000 active citizens around the globe ages 18-40 are taking the opportunity
to create positive change through JCI. Through activities ranging from local
development to international initiatives, JCI members are empowered to improve
their communities and themselves through participation, leadership and action.

5
1910: Henry Giessenbier, a young active citizen, formed the Herculaneum
Dancing Club in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
It started as a social club whose purpose was to form a closer and more
pleasant relationship among the members to concentrate on better ideas and
social standing.

Over the next five years, Giessnbier created several clubs and often invited
speakers to events

1915: After hearing Colonel Huse N. Morgan argue the case for the
construction of a highway through the City of St. Louis, Henry Giessenbier felt
compelled to become more active in his community.
He realized how much young people could accomplish for their communities and for
themselves if they worked together.

It began with a dream Having an inspirational and motivational dream is important to

the achievement of your goals. However as the founder of JCI demonstrated, it is the
action you take that achieves your dreams.

A young man called Henry Giessenbier founded JCI in St. Louis as far back as 1915.
Henry had a dream that through civic action young people could become active
citizens;

“great purpose of fellowship, advancement and everything which would make a good
Active citizenship is a concept that concerns everyone. As global citizens, we all have
rights and responsibilities. We have shared local, national and global interests. Active
citizenship is the capacity we all have to work together towards these shared goals.

This is the spirit that links all JCI members: their sense of social responsibility and
their initiative to take action to create a better future for all.

In JCI, active citizenship is a long-established concept. The JCI movement is a means

by which young people have become active citizens for more than 100 years.

JCI is the original organization of young active citizens.

This module further illustrates JCI as a Global Network of Young Active Citizens.

Feel free to rehearse through the slide transitions and discuss common ground with
the participants should any particular country or continent strike their interests
accordingly. You may discuss the slides as briefly or as comprehensively as you would
like depending on your knowledge of the international organization
Click one at a time to be able to maximize the effect of the slide transitions.

This shows where JCI National Organizations are Covering four geographical regions:
Africa and the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, the Americas and Europe, JCI has
established National Organizations in over 100 countries and Local Organizations in
about 5,000 communities. All members belong to a JCI Local Organization where they
work to develop their local community. Local Organizations are affiliated to National
Organizations where members coordinate activities on national and international
scales. This structure links JCI members together to form a global grassroots
movement. Through this network, members create global impact through local
action.

*should anyone notice that JCI Australia and JCI New Zealand is part of Asia-Pacfic
and how Africa and Middle East was merged into one geographical region, kindly
explain that the National Organizations were grouped together according to its
geographical proximity to each other, thus forming the four groups that we have
internationally.

10
Emphasize how huge this network is, and how beneficial it can be both to the
individual member and in aid of the advancement of addressing causes that they are
passionate about
Not only is JCI the original organization of young active citizens, JCI is the original
global organization of young active citizens.
We’ve been working internationally for 65 years, producing a unique global
perspective.

JCI fosters this global perspective by uniting diverse cultures at our international
events. Each year, JCI holds 1 World Congress, 4 Area Conferences (Africa and the
Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, the Americas, and Europe). JCI often teams up with
partners to hold Summits where we form action plans to address current issues
facing our world, including the Advancement of the UN Millennium Development
Goals, Corporate Social Responsibility, and Climate Change. JCI members understand
that in a globalized world, their local actions echo around the world. They appreciate
both the challenges and opportunities of globalization while living the JCI value “the
brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations.”

JCI’s international dialogue serves as a catalyst for new international development

projects. In these forums, JCI members express their sense of responsibility to the
global community and display their respect for others through international
cooperation.

12
Briefly show the and enumerate the upcoming conferences of JCI Internationally

This module discusses briefly, what moves us as an organization through mission and
vision of the organization
JCI members today share the same ideas and goals as they did nearly 100 years ago.

Some key concepts stand out of the JCI mission:

development opportunities, empowerment of young people; positive change

16
As an ultimate goal of our organization, we wish to be the leading global network of
young active citizens.

As many young people around the globe embrace the power they have to improve
themselves and their communities, we hope to lead the world toward a better future.

17
This Module demonstrates the active citizenship framework and how it helps us as
young active citizens to be a part of a global network that can provide for
opportunities for us to be better through learning in JCI training and learning through
experience of running projects and programs in JCI.
For this slide, you may chose to replace the given project with a project of your own
so long as you follow the same format of presenting the project/program that you
will show.

More action shots of the projects and/or videos can also help in engaging your
potential member to be more interested in your organization.

19
Talk about how much it would take to create projects with sustainable solutions.

Ask the participants what one person would need to have in order to be able to
deliver programs and projects of high quality.

Then after asking if you can do it alone, talk about the downside of over stretching
yourself in doing projects.

Talk about how it can limit you as an individual with businesses and relationships that
you also need to attend to.
JCI Active Citizenship Framework
This is the Active Citizen Framework. It is the process that JCI organization use to
engage and mobilize support with the community to bring about positive change. It is
the JCI road map to change the world.

chapter or the project that we shared in this module. Talk about how it takes
communities learning together to create sustainable solutions.

better to your potential members. Here we have guide questions that the members
can use in introducing your chapters and their projects and programs in the following
slides.

Feel free to edit this slide specially for chapter implementations of our orientation
program for regional runs, make sure you have communicated these questions ahead
of time to the officers of the chapter present specially if you are not that familiar with
the chapter you are introducing

Tell the participants this years’ call to action which is strength in unity which aims to
create and promote a united JCI Philippines in delivering projects and programs that
create positive change in our respective communities.

integrate with JCI Chapters all around the country!

Take the time to talk about your particular region and how chapters in your
community work together in positive change.
If you already know where your area conference will be located, you can also add it
here as well. Narrate how once a year members of JCI Philippines from different
chapters gather and celebrate our impact to our communities through the various
activities offered in the National Convention!

members can approach for any inquiries about the organization.

You may simply list the names of officers your members can approach, but its always
better to also post their pictures or even their contact numbers/ email addresses

Journey of a Young Active Citizen
In summary of the video that was previously shown…

JCI helps all its members, partners and stakeholders become better! We provide
development opportunities especially to our members by learning from the
processes that we use in creating positive change!
These are the basic requirements in being a member of JCI. It is advisable that at
every orientation program, your chapter has a welcome letter that will make your
potential member feel that they are wanted and they can belong in your organization.
The letter can also contain the details of the membership dues and the payment
schemes that you may have to encourage them to be active members and to pay
their membership dues of your chapter
You will determine that by joining JCI to commit to solving the problems of the world
in way that humanity has never dreamed. It will begin right here in your community.
You will work with community stakeholders, identify challenges and implement
creative solutions. As a member you own this organization. You will be empowered
here with the capability to change the world.

40
Invite your members to the next set of activities that you have. If you have posters for
your next activities, insert them in these slides
Leave them a way to check and learn more about our organization, area, region and
/or chapters. Showing them that you have online presence can make them feel that
you are a professional organization and it will also give your potential member a
chance to learn more about what your chapter in particular does outside the
orientation program. This can perhaps persuade them in joining more of your
activities and being active and paid members of your chapter
With the speed of change in the information age, we can’t know what problems we’ll
have to face tomorrow. But whatever they are, we know we will be ready for them.

What can you do today to improve yourself and your community?

Thank your participants and welcome them to the organization
