Welcome to 'Alice in Londonland', Valerie Phillips' tenth book which marks a return to the single
subject, but now presenting landscape as well as portraiture and published in a new format. Alice
in Londonland is a step change for Phillips, an evolution of her art.

Alice and Valerie take you on a journey through London, pie and mash shops, Victorian
dinosaurs, Lycamobile branded shopfronts and dragons galore. This is what London looks like,
really looks like. It is a break from the glossy tourist images of the Royal Parks, West London
terraces, Beefeaters at the tower and the Royal Family. Alice in Londonland shows us the beauty
and the bizarre in the corner shops, the "caffs", the back alleys, the pot plants, pubs and the
peeling paint. Alice is dressed in London too - finding all her outfits in various charity shops - or
pulled from Phillips' wardrobe.

The book is a product of Phillips' discomfort and comfort. Drained by the constant moving for
freelance jobs, Phillips took a self-imposed break from travelling, taking a year to enjoy and
explore her home surroundings in London. It was this that led her to see her habitat of more than
a decade in a new light, becoming an explorer in her own backyard.

In Alice in Londonland, Alice is our tour guide, showcasing the streets and buildings Phillips had
discovered in her year at home. As Lewis Carroll explores the wonderous world of wonderland
through Alice, Phillips explores a Londoner's London. Warts, Alice and all.
