GREATER NOIDA, 26 July 2019 – Bennett University organised a field trip
for the students of BJMC programme, from 23rd July to 25th July. The field
trip was to THE TIMES OF INDIA Printing Press in Sahibabad, Ghaziabad.
The students went with two faculty members each day whilst the students
were divided into three groups.

In the printing press we were introduced to Mr. Anil Kumar Singh who was
the head of the Tech department at The TOI Sahibabad. Firstly, all the
students were divided into two groups and were taken through the
printing area towards the Tec room. There Mr. Anil Kumar showed a
presentation which vastly explained how the printing press works.

The TOI Sahibabad Printing Press prints thirty-two lakh newspapers per
day. The plant is connected with 300 – 325 vehicles which transport the
newspapers daily. The newsprint consumption is 7500 MT (mega
tonne)/month. The electricity bill comes out to be Rs.1.2 crore every month
and the plant consumes 200 KL water per day. All this usage of various
resources, with daily and continuous hard work is just to provide
newspapers to the common man of this nation.

Newspaper printing is a huge work. The students were explained how the
printing works with the help of a presentation and a tour in the printing
press. Firstly the journalists provide stories to the editor and the
photographers provide photographs to the page designing department. The
editor and sub-editors, edit the reports to make them ready for the
newspaper. The page designing department takes the edited reports and
the photographs and design each and every page of the newspaper. The
pages are exposed to an aluminium plate which is then put on printing
units through which the paper rolls by and newspaper gets printed. Then
these are mechanically counted, stacked, strapped and packed for
transportation. From here the newspapers are transported to the vendors
and then to the public.

All the work is done mechanically except the transportation. In every

printing press of The Times Of India there are fixed timings for the printing
to be finished and the plant is bound to follow it. The schedule is made for
everyone, the reporters, the photographers, the editors, for the staff
working with the printing press and the transporters as well. Only after
following this schedule it is possible to provide newspapers all over the
country.
