Definition of Terms

Azadirachta Indica (Neem Tree)- A large tropical Asian tree (Azadirachta indica) of the mahogany
family having a bitter bark used as a tonic and leaves and seeds that have insecticidal and antiseptic
properties and yield a medicinal aromatic oil.

Chikungunya- Is a mosquito-borne viral disease first described during an outbreak in southern

Tanzania in 1952. It is an RNA virus that belongs to the alphavirus genus of the family Togaviridae. The
name “chikungunya” derives from a word in the Kimakonde language, meaning “to become
contorted”, and describes the stooped appearance of sufferers with joint pain (arthralgia).

Dengue- Is a mosquito-borne viral infection causing a severe flu-like illness and, sometimes causing a
potentially lethal complication called severe dengue. The incidence of dengue has increased 30-fold
over the last 50 years. Up to 50-100 million infections are now estimated to occur annually in over 100
endemic countries, putting almost half of the world’s population at risk. A debilitating viral disease of
the tropics, transmitted by mosquitoes, and causing sudden fever and acute pains in the joints.

Effectiveness- Is the capability of producing a desired result or the ability to produce desired output.
When something is deemed effective, it means it has an intended or expected outcome, or produces a
deep, vivid impression. Effectiveness, in business, refers to the level of quality with which a task or
process is carried out that ultimately leads to higher overall business performance.

Filariasis- A tropical disease caused by the presence of filarial worms, especially in the lymph vessels
where heavy infestation can result in elephantiasis. It is a parasitic disease caused by an infection
with roundworms of the Filarioidea type. These are spread by blood-feeding diptera as black
flies and mosquitoes. This disease belongs to the group of diseases called helminthiases.

Malaria- Is a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by a parasite that infects a type of mosquito
which feeds on humans. Once an infected mosquito bites a human, the parasites multiply in the host’s
liver before infecting and destroying their red blood cells. People who get malaria are usually very sick
with symptoms such as high fevers, shaking chills, and flu-like illness. An intermittent and remittent
fever caused by a protozoan parasite that invades the red blood cells. The parasite is transmitted by
mosquitoes in many tropical and subtropical regions.

Mosquito- A slender long-legged fly with aquatic larvae. The bite of the bloodsucking female can
transmit a number of serious diseases including malaria and encephalitis. Mosquitoes (alternate
spelling mosquitos) are a group of about 3500 species of small insects that are a type
of fly (order Diptera). Within that order they constitute the family Culicidae (from the
Latin culex meaning "gnat"). The word "mosquito" (formed by mosca and diminutive -ito) is Spanish for
"little fly". Mosquitoes have a slender segmented body, a pair of wings, three pairs of long hair-like legs,
feathery antennae, and elongated mouthparts.
