An Otto cycle has the lowest T as 290 K and the lowest P is 150 kPa, the highest
T is 2400 K and combustion adds 1200 kJ/kg as heat transfer. Find the
compression ratio and the mean effective pressure.
Solution:
Identify states: T1 = 290 K, P1 = 150 kPa, T3 = 2400 K, qH = 1200 kJ/kg
Combustion: qH = u3 – u2 = Cvo(T3 – T2) = 1200 kJ/kg
T2 = T3 – qH / Cvo = 2400 – 1200/0.717 = 726.36 K

726.362.5
Compression: CR = rv = v1/v2 = (T2/T1)1/(k-1) =  290  = 9.93
 
Overall cycle efficiency is from Eq.10.12, rv = v1/v2 = 9.93
1-k
ηTH = 1 − rv = 1 − T1/T2 = 1 – 290/726.36 = 0.601
wnet = ηTH × qH = 0.601 × 1200 = 721.2 kJ/kg
We also need specific volume to evaluate Eqs.10.9 to 10.11

v1 = RT1 / P1 = 0.287 × 290 / 150 = 0.55487 m3/kg

v2 = v1/CR = 0.05588 m3/kg

wnet 721.2 kJ/kg
Pmeff = v – v = = 1445 kPa
1 2 0.55487 − 0.05588 m3/kg
