Annual Report 2014/2015

Edited by: Dr. H.D. Yapa

Civil Engineering Society (CES)
The Civil Engineering Society (CES) of the University of Peradeniya is one of the leading,
energetic societies in the University system, presently, it consists of well over 500 members.
The CES organises numerous attractive activities mainly to facilitate its students to gain
valuable knowledge and skills which are seldom conveyed to them over the academic
programme. Besides, the CES anticipates to enhance students’ passion towards Civil
Engineering and to encourage them to get involved in group/social activities. The prominent
event organised by the CES is the annual seminar and the other activities include talks,
seminars, field visits, workshops, and competitions.

Being one of the longest-service organizations within the university system in Sri Lanka, the
CES has survived and thrived through over 40 years of its history. The history of the CES
goes all the way back to year 1973. At that time the university was named as the University
of Ceylon. The CES was under the auspices of then Dean Prof. H.B De Silva and Prof A.
Thurairajah. The inaugural president of the society was Dr. K. Shanmuganthan. The first
event organized was a talk delivered on 15.02.1973 by Mr. D.G.L Rathnathunge of the
irrigation department, the talk was upon hydrology. The annual seminar of the CES was also
initiated in the same year.

In year 1974, Prof A. Thurairajah was appointed as the president of the CES. He held the
position for two years. During that time he did a great service towards the development of the
society. Over the years there were not many changes in the structure of the society, apart
from the addition of an editor in 1979 and several standing sub-committees. Much emphasis
was given to the Mahawali project during the latter part of the 70s and early 80s in the most
of the CES activities including the annual seminar. But due to the political turmoil in the
country during the late 80s, the activities and the progress of the CES were retarded.
However again in the early 90s, the CES immersed with a renewed spirit. The CES adopted
new strategies giving much concern to new frontiers, such as environmental engineering and
transportation engineering. Over the recent past, along with the boost in construction
industry, increase in student intake, and expansion in the academic crew; the CES has
become a well established, stable and effective society and its impact on the student life has
broadened significantly.

Vision
The Civil Engineering society will be a significant contributor to the Faculty of Engineering
in achieving its vision of becoming the centre of excellence in engineering education and
research in South Asia.

Mission
The mission of the Civil Engineering Society is to provide a common platform, through
various activities, for the civil engineering students, the staff and the industry to interact and
thereby, enrich their academic and professional lives.

CES ANNUAL SEMINAR- 2015

The main event organised by the CES is its annual seminar. This year, the annual seminar
themed on High-rise Buildings was successfully held on July 4th 2015 at EOE Pereira
Theatre.

The event inaugurated with the presence of Dean Prof. L. Rajapaksha, Keynote speaker Prof.
W.P.S. Dias, Civil Engineering Department head Prof. P.B.R. Dissanayake. Then, the
sponsor’s message was delivered by the Ceylon Steel Corporation Ltd. and certificates were
awarded to the five LANWA scholars for 2015.

Senior Professor W.P.S. Dias (at University of Moratuwa) delivered the Keynote speech
exhibiting his enormous experience and knowledge over the subject. The talk was very much
fruitful and interesting, was highly appreciated by everybody. Meanwhile, Prof. Abayakoon
introduced Prof. Dias to the audience recalling many and unseen achievements and servings
to the society by Prof. Dias, the audience including Prof. Dias looked stunned with Prof.
Abayakoon’s vocal.

The speakers for the first technical session were Archt. Dananjana Amarasekara and Eng.
Indradeva Mendis, and Dr. A.L.M. Mauroof was the session chair. Archt. Amarasekara
talked into architectural aspects of high-rise buildings along with his distinct experience, the
presentation was highly illustrative and interesting. Eng. Mendis spoke of building services in
high-rise buildings, he inspired the whole audience, the talk illustrated his vast experience
and was nicely coupled with humour, so everybody enjoyed.
The afternoon technical session was addressed by Eng. Samitha Jayakody and Eng. Shiromal
Fernando and was chaired by Dr. U.I. Dissanayake. Eng. Jayakody shared his vast experience
in high-rise building construction, his presentation comprised exceptional technical details.
Eng. Fernando went into talk on design aspects of high-rise buildings, he summarised this
wide subject area into the given slot nicely.
The student participation for the event was impressive, 350 students from the CES, 55
visiting students from Civil Engineering Departments of Moratuwa University, Ruhuna

5
University and Jaffna University, 55 students from the Post-graduate programme currently
conducted at the Civil Engineering Department. However, CES student participation at the

CES TALK SERIES
Talk 1: January 29, 2015

Speaker: Dr. (Mrs). Achela Fernando, Senior Lecturer, Griffith University

Topic: Assessment of environmental impacts of sewer overflows into water bodies-
some case studies of modelling of impacts

Abstract:
In most well-established cities, the waste water systems have been in operation for
over 100 years. Typically, older parts of a city are likely to still have a combined
system, while new developments tend to be separate system. When combined sewer
overflows (CSOs) and sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) occur from the collection
system, untreated waste water is discharged into the environment. Overflows are not
just unsightly but also pose major public concern due to their environmental and
health impacts.

Talk 2: February 25, 2015

Speaker: Dr. Ryo Honda, Assistant professor, Kanazawa University

Topic: Towards sustainable pollution control in urban development

Abstract:
Severe deterioration of environment is often caused by rapid urbanization.
Environment which one severely damaged is hardly recovered as it was. One of the
major difficulties in protection of environment under urbanization is time lag between
expansion of people’s settlement and coverage of environmental infrastructure
services, such as waste water treatment and solid waste management. Moreover, in
the early stage of urbanization, people’s awareness on environmental protection is
weak. Therefore, installation of such infrastructure tends to delayed even more.
Ideally, the countermeasures should be planned and implemented in advance, to
recover those challenges. To realize such advanced measures, we need good
prediction of environmental burdens in the area where urbanization is about to
happen.

7
Talk 3: March 4, 2015

Speaker: Dr. Priyantha Gunaratna, Senior Coastal Modeling Specialist, Dubai

Municipality

Topic: Monitoring the Complex Coastal Zone of Dubai

Abstract:
The Dubai coastal zone is one of the most complex coastal zone in the world,
although it is only 72 km in length. It is interspersed with massive reclamations such
as Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Ali and the worlds Islands, which is conglomerate of
200 offshore islands taking the shape of the world. In addition several medium to
small scale reclaimed island resorts, commercial and fishery harbours, marinas
cooling water intakes and outlets do exist are growing day by day. The Dubai Creek,
which is a 14 km long natural waterway has been dredged to facilitate inland
navigation for good transport and leisure boating. The development of a network of
canal system connected to the Dubai Creek is already in progress. However, these
coastal development in Dubai have created complex coastal problems due to resulting
alternations in coastal processes, and therefore monitoring of Dubai coastal zone and
the canal system is considered as a high priority issue.

Talk 4: April 1, 2015

Speaker: Dr. Haran Arampamoorthy, Principal researcg engineer at Opus

International Consultants Ltd.

Topic: Micro behaviour of granular pavement during road construction face and
service time

Abstract:

Talk 7: July 21, 2015

Speaker: Dr. Upul Attanayake, Associate Professor of Civil and Construction
Engineering at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan
Topic: Performance of typical low-rise reinforced concrete commercial buildings
under seismic loads

Abstract:
In many part of the world, typical low-rise reinforced concrete commercial buildings
are designed and constructed without any consideration of seismic loading. Generally,
these structures possess several earthquake vulnerable features, such as weak/soft
story, strong beam/ weak column, torsion, excessive mass on upper floors, short
column effects, P-effects, etc. Sometimes, these structures may possess certain level
of lateral load capacity due minimum member size requirements, avoidance of strict
optimization of materials because of practical consideration, strain hardening of steel,
presence of masonry infill, architectural requirements, etc. According to earthquake
damages occurred in several other countries, a large number of buildings that
collapsed or suffered severe damages was low-rise buildings and the consequences of
those very large in terms of destructions and suffering. The most common failure
mode of typical low-rise reinforced concrete commercial buildings is the weak and /
or soft story mechanisms. Due to various purposes, the first floor of most buildings in
this type is either taller than the other floors or has relatively less number of infill
panels and partition walls. Hence evaluation of seismic load capacity of such
structures is justified.

Talk 8: August 13, 2015

Speaker: Eng. Ranjan Fernando

Topic: Piling work

Abstract: Pile is the foundation that uses widely to provide a firm foundation to any
type of buildings as well as structures. The construction of the pile is very necessary
to consider at this situation. Also, the duty of the engineer is to identify the problems
arrives and provide the proper solutions at the construction of Pile foundations. This
talk represents, all the construction works regarding the piling work and problems at
the construction stage.

9
Talk 9: August 26, 2015

Speaker: Mr. Suranga Jayasena, Senior Lecturer, University of Moratuwa

Topic: Introduction into BIM software

Abstract: In the modernizing world, everything is going to conduct and relate with
computerized. When the work load increases, man share his works to computerized
systems. In such way, at the construction field, BIM is one of the major thing
developing now. BIM is Building Modelling Software that uses to coordinate the
work in digital explanation to make the work easy, smooth and less conflict. This talk
represents such kind of achievement of BIM software.

Inter University Concrete Mix Design Competition 2015

Guidelines

1. The competition will be open to the student groups that won the competition at University
level and groups should be consist the same number of participants as at university level.
2. The contest will be based on the highest average 28 day compressive strength with cost
effective manner generated from three 150 mm × 150 mm × 150 mm cubes.
3. Candidates are allowed to use any potential mix design method to carry out the design.
4. Available materials would be cement, coarse aggregate, and fine aggregate, a super
plasticizer, silica fume and water. All the materials that will be given with the same quality and
grading. The cost of all the materials will be informed at the time of announcing the
competition based on the market price prevailing at the time. Same brand and manufacturer
of the products will be maintained during all stages of the competitions.
o Cement =
o Fine aggregate =
o Coarse aggregate =
o Silica fume =
o Super plasticizer =
5. The contestant groups are allowed choose any material combination that they wish from the
above list. The maximum allowable cementitious materials (Cement + supplementary
cementitious materials) content is 550 kg/m3.
6. Workability of the concrete will be measured using the slump cone. The minimum slump
should be 80mm. Groups failing to achieve the required slump, would be given one more
trial to upgrade their concrete mix to achieve 80 mm slump requirement. Cubes should be
cast using the provided moulds and compacted using the vibrating table in the Holcim I&A
Centre in RCW Galle Plant
7. Material will be mixed using the concrete mixer available in the Holcim I &A Centre RCW
Galle Plant .
8. A type written design proposal should be submitted by the candidate groups elaborating
target concrete properties, design criterion, cost, assumptions, etc.
9. The composition of the mix design should be declared on the day of the competition.
10. The wining group will be selected based on the strength to cost ratio (Strength/Cost) from
among the mixes that have achieved the minimum slump requirement of 80 mm during
casting. Compressive strength will be determined in N/mm2. Cost per m3 of concrete will be
established based fresh density of the concrete determined by BS EN 12350-6:2009 or similar
appropriate standard/method and the actual weights and hence the cost of the material used
for the cast. In the case of a tie, identical strength to cost ratio
N/mm2/Rs., the group that records the higher workability will be
considered the winners.
