Materialism is the death of spiritualism

Your honour, materialism means that physical matter is the only reality and that everything,
including thought, feeling, mind, and will, can be explained in terms of matter and physical
phenomena. It rejects spiritualism, a philosophy, doctrine, or religion emphasizing the
spiritual aspect of being. All progress of man speaks of his exploits in materialism. He has
looked in the volcano, dived into the ocean, perforated the earth, winged its flight into the
skies, explored sea and land, contemplated the distant, examined the minute, comprehended
the great and ascended to the sublime of progress. But at the same time this material progress
has caused man to suffer from many depravities and led him to many disastrous ends. It is the
same belief in the matter that has engulfed the world in the tornado of obscenity and vulgarity
on the wings of the Internet and television where half nude girls garlanding their arms around
the backs of half conscious youth are its representatives. Then there are the drunkards
dancing excitedly to this crime against humanity. The sweet songs of this civilization are
those that produce only thrill or show the nude scenes. As the materialism is based on the
dictates of reason alone so it has put the humanity on road to barbarism and brutality. It has
changed the shape of the earth as well as man. It has banished spirituality from its so-called
sophisticated Coke town.
Your honour, materialism is the death of the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, long
suffering, gentleness, patience and goodness. Materialism is a method, disharmonises the
inherent balance of nature and creates insurmountable ecological problems, sells our souls in
the manner of Faust to gain control over the forces of nature, throws overboard the values
and beliefs which swayed the human mind for centuries, leads to the erosion of spiritual and
moral values. materialism pours the sweet milk of concord into hell, uproars the universal
peace, confounds all unity on earth, encourages practice of arrogance, greed, murder,
breaking agreements, lying, hypocrisy, vilification, ethnic cleansing, injustice and
cowardice. Therefore mmaterialism is the death of the spiritualism.
Your honour, devoid of the most cherished certainties of life, we are left groping in
doubt and confusion. Faced with moral dilemmas, we have been compared to “ignorant
armies clashing by night on a darkening plain”, wistfully reminiscent of an age when “the sea
of faith was full”. The vacuum of moral values, together with mounting violence, injustice
and exploitation, have disenchanted sensitive minds and alienated them from the rhythms of
purposeful existence. Materialism destroys the fruit of spiritualism in any form whether you
show your patience as a woman nursing a fretful child, or as a man attending to the vexing
detail of a business, or as a physician following the dark mazes of sickness, or as a mechanic
fitting the joints and valves of a locomotive.
Your honour, desperate pursuit of material ends cause death to spiritual values and a
sense of purpose. The frantic pursuit of materialism creates an amoral society which
suffocates gentleness and affability. Spirituality gives a native, unaffected ease to the
behaviour; far removed from the cloudy and illiberal disposition of materialism which clouds
the brow, sharpens the temper, and dejects the spirit.
Materialism breeds perverse forms of sexual behaviour, child abuse and neglect of the
elderly, the institution of the family, which not only embodies human feelings of love, filial
devotion and parental care but also serves as the sheet anchor of social stability. The
materialism has its roots in the philosophy of determinism which subjects man to external
forces which may be the laws of the physical world, as Newton showed; or adaptation to the
natural environment as a principle of the evolution of species, as Darwin proved; or changes
in the mode of production as a determinant of human history, as Marx demonstrated; or the
vast zone of unconscious out of which human actions spring, as Freud maintained. This way
of thinking has spawned a feeling of despair and futility of human existence.
The depletion of the natural environment, the erosion of moral and spiritual values, the
onslaught of materialism and nationalism, the mad stampede for power projection in the face
of desperate hunger and disease faced by millions of people around the globe, brutal power
struggles, wreaking death and destruction on millions of people are some of the sordid
aspects of an amoral society based on the philosophy of materialism.
Your honour, when evil spirits of oppression, despotism, tyranny and scarlet sin engulf
us, when dark forces of injustice, wickedness and naked aggression are let loose over us;
when basic values are trampled, mutilated, caricatured, distorted, misrepresented, corrupted
under the benign movement of enlightenment; when bitter pills of un- Islamic concepts,
irreligious attitudes, unethical practices, immoral behaviour are forcibly thrust down the
throat; when unsavoury, unacceptable, ruinous changes are introduced at gun point to mar
peace; when this wasteland, this nightmarish world is ruled by Lords of the jungle, it is
materialism that is taken in and spiritualism is taken out.
Your honour, unless we harness ourselves to moral and human values, and commit
our energies to constructive purposes, we may well be sitting on a powder keg, running the
risk of being engulfed by our own clever devices.

Thank you
