b. intensity of an earthquake from its magnitude; and
c. active and inactive faults; (S8ES-IIa15)
3. Explain how earthquake waves provide information about the
interior of the earth. (S8ES-IIc17)

This module is designed to equip you, learners, with essential

knowledge, skills, and attitude on mechatronics in accordance with
industry standards that will lead you toward achieving National
Certificate Level II.

The module is made up of the following components:

1. Expected Learning Outcomes - This lays out the learning

outcomes that you are expected to have accomplished at the
end of the module.
2. Pre assessment - This determines your prior learning on the
particular unit of competencies you are about to take.

knowledge and principles you have gained from the lesson and
enables you to further enhance your skills as you carry out
prescribed tasks.
7. Post-assessment - This evaluates your overall understanding
about the module.

This module is designed so you can pace yourself as you use them to
achieve the prescribed learning competencies. It also aims to prepare
you to be at the forefront of the fast-growing world of industry and in
your quest for higher education, middle-skills development,
employment, and entrepreneurship.

HOW TO USE THIS MODULE
This module contains several lessons. To make the most out of them,
you need to do the following:

1. Scan the list of Expected Learning Outcomes to get an idea of the

knowledge and skills you are expected to gain and develop as
you study the module. These outcomes are based on the content
standards, performance standards, and learning competencies
of the K to 12 Curriculum for the Technical-Vocational-
Livelihood (TVL) track.

2. Take the Pre assessment. Your score will determine your

knowledge of the lessons in the module. If you get 100% of the
items correctly, you may proceed to the next module. Otherwise,
you must go through the lessons.

3. Each Lesson aims to develop one of the learning outcomes set

for the module. It opens with a list of objectives that you are
expected to have accomplished by the end of the lesson. The
objectives are intended to unpack the learning outcome for the
lesson.

4. Read and understand the content in the Lesson Information

sections that make up a lesson. This component contains the
basic information that you need to know to be able to
accomplish the lesson objectives.

5. At the end of the lesson, take the Self-Check to find out how
much you have learned. If you do not get all the test items
correctly, go back to the Lesson Information. This will ensure
your mastery of basic information.

6. Perform the required Learning Activity, which may consist of one

or more tasks for you to accomplish. It is not enough that you
acquire content or information, but you must also be able to
apply what you have learned in real-life situations. Evaluate
your performance using the Scoring Rubrics.

7. At the end of the module, take the Post-Assessment to evaluate

your overall understanding about the lessons.

3
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the module, you should be able to:

LO1. read and interpret work instruction according to the

installation job requirements;
LO2. identify tools, equipment, testing devices, and materials
needed for installation;
LO3. install mechatronic devices; and
LO4. conduct test on the installed mechatronic devices.

DEFINITION OF TECHNICAL TERMS

Actuator. The component that delivers the mechanical power
that was converted either from an electric, hydraulic, or
pneumatic power source.

Air compressor. A machine that is used to compress the fresh air

drawn from the atmosphere.

Communication. The sharing of information between two or more

individuals or groups to reach a common understanding.

Hydraulic. The branch of science that deals with the study and
use of liquids as related to the mechanical aspects of physics.

LESSON INFORMATION 1.1

Fundamentals of Mechatronics )-MH (Main Head)

In several technical areas the integration of products or processes and

electronics can be observed. These systems change from electro-
mechanical systems with discrete electrical and mechanical parts to
integrate electronic-mechanical systems with sensors, actuators, and
digital microelectronics. These integrated systems are called
mechatronic systems with the connection of MECHAnics and
elecTRONICS. The term "mechatronics" was coined in 1969 by
Tetsuro Mori, the senior engineer of the Japanese company Yaskawa
which was founded in 1915, as a combination of "mecha" of
mechanisms and "tronics" of electronics.

The term was introduced to the technical terminology by the Yaskawa

Elektric Corporation, and the company was granted trademark rights
on the word in 1971 and it has been protected as a trade name.

5
Key Elements of a Mechatronic System )- Subhead 1
The key elements of mechatronics are electronics, digital control,
sensors and actuators, and information technology. All are integrated
in such a way to produce a real product that is of practical use to
people.

Electronics/Electrical )- Subhead 2
The electronics/electrical element is made up of the following:

 Electrical components, such as the resistor (R), capacitor (C),

inductor (L), transformer, motors, relays, switches, control
circuits and sources of analog signals

 Electronics components, which include the analog/digital

electronics, transistors, thyristors, opto-isolators, operational
amplifiers, power electronics, and signal conditioning

Electro-Mechanical Element )- Subhead 2

The electro-mechanical element is made up of the sensors, actuators,
and IC-based sensors and actuators.

6
The Pneumatic System )- Subhead 1

The pneumatic system is formed by various pneumatic components

such as cylinders, directional control valves, and flow control valves.

Pneumatic components can be divided into two categories:

1. Components that produce and transport compressed air
2. Components that consume compressed air

Fig. 1. Basic Components of a Pneumatic System

How Pneumatic Systems Work )- Subhead 2

Air is drawn from the atmosphere through an air filter and raised to
required pressure by an air compressor. External power supply motor
is used to drive the air compressor. The air compressor is used to
compress the fresh air drawn from the atmosphere. As the pressure
rises, the temperature also rises, air cooler is provided to cool the air
with some preliminary treatment to remove the moisture.

Then the treatment pressurized air needs to get stored to maintain the
pressure. The receiver or storage reservoir is used to store a given
volume of compressed air. In the receiver or reservoir, a pressure
switch is fitted to start and stop the electric motor when pressure falls
and reached the required level, respectively.

Pneumatic actuators convert the fluid power into mechanical power to

do useful work. The cylinder movement is controlled a by pneumatic
valve. These valves are used to control the direction, flow rate and etc.
