CHAPTER 2 – LESSON 3
SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS

INTRODUCTION

The school and the community can create a healthy environment if they work
together. They forge partnership where both parties are willing to share
information and responsibilities.

The figure above shows the parents provide assistance on terms of resources
while the teachers give their time, effort and expertise. In reality, the relationship
between parents and teachers are more dynamic since teachers also contribute
resources when need arises and parents also give their time to monitor their
children’s progress in school.

A. THE TEACHERS, PARENTS AND THE COMMUNITY

Parents:
 First teachers at home
 Responsible for values, attitudes and habits development
Teachers:
 Enrich the students’ experience at home
 Strengthens the valuable personal traits initially developed
 Second parents
Members of the community:
 Include the LGU, NGO, CSO, and all residents
 Highly motivated to participate in the school activities
1. Difficulties

Teachers face problems despite their efforts:


 Ability to accomplish assignments;
 Irregular attendance;
 Study habits in school;
 Negative attitudes, and
 Problem with self-discipline.

2. Solutions

Interventions made to address the difficulties:


 A calm and friendly face-to-face exchange of observations;
 Patience and kindheartedness;
 Letters and praises to parents for outstanding performances;
 Interesting lessons;
 Detailed consideration of past experiences in school and at home.

3. Values Developed

Instilled starting from the home and further developed at school:


 Respect for elders and rights of others;
 Cooperation;
 Willingness to share;
 Deep sense of responsibility;
 Persistence.

B. SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY

1. Collaborative Relationships

a. The school officials participate in community projects such as literacy


assistance project and house campaigns.
b. The government officials are ready to help in improving facilities of
the school and salaries of teachers.
c. Both actively participate in historic celebrations which foster civic-
consciousness.

2. Organized Associations

a. Schools have organized Parent-Teacher Associations with officers


coming from both of their members. They undertake projects and
activities aimed at promoting a harmonious and enjoyable
relationship among themselves.
b. The Brigada Eskwela is another example. It is conducted at the
beginning of the school year and is now being institutionalized by the
Department of Education. It aims to revive the spirit of bayanihan
among Filipinos.
c. The School Governing Council (SGC) under the leadership of the
school head shares in the task of policy making in the school.
3. Public Safety, Beautification and Cleanliness

a. Peace and order


b. Safety in public transportation
c. Compliance with ordinances
d. Tree planting
e. Proper waste disposal

4. Values Exhibited

a. Honoring outstanding officials and citizens in the community;


b. Modeling respect for authority and self-discipline

5. Instructional Centers and Materials

a. Community as a rich sources for instructional materials


b. Town libraries and other establishments can be learning centers for
field trips
c. Community provides areas for entertainment and recreation
d. Professionals from the community can be invited as resource
speakers

INTRODUCTION

The school and its community in collaboration with public and private entities
can create an impact on the lives of students, teachers, and members of the
community. The school can enjoy linkages ad networking activities with
organizations for mutual benefits and assistance.
