Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie

Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie was born on June 25, 1936 in the sleepy seaside town

of Pare-Pare in the Indonesian state of South Sulawesi. The fourth of eight children, he was

nicknamed “Rudy” at an early age. His father, Alwi Abdul Jalil Habibie, was a government

agricultural official. His mother, R.A. Tuti Marini Puspowardoyo, was a Javanese woman.

Habibie married H. Hasri Ainun, a doctor, on May 12, 1962. They had two children, Ilham

Akbar and Thareq Kemal. Both were born in Germany.

Habibie passed his childhood with his brothers and sisters. As a child he liked

swimming, reading, singing, riding his father’s racehorses, and building model airplanes.

On September 3, 1950, when he was 13, his father suffered a heart attack and died. Then

Habibie moved to Bandung to continue his school at Gouverments Middlebare School. At

his school, he was interest in exact sciences. He was a favorite person there.

After graduated from that school in 1954, he entered to the Bandung Institute of

Technology. His interest in building model airplanes continued while he took science and

mathematics as his major. His mother approved him to continue his studies in Germany.

Habibie studied aircraft construction engineering at the Technische Hochschule of Achen.

After graduated with a doctoral degree from the Achen Institute in 1965 with

summa cum laude predicate, Habibie joined the aircraft manufacturing firm, up to the rank

of vice president. He helped design some planes, including the DO-31. He also became

involved in international aircraft marketing activities and NATO’s defense.


In 1974, the second President of Indonesia, Soeharto, asked him to return to his

beloved country to help establish on industrial base. He became a minister of research and

technology during 20 years. He also led 10 state enterprises. He was selected by the

People’s Advisory Assembly as a Vice President of Indonesia. Then the Supreme Court

took his oath and he became the third President of Indonesia, replaced Soeharto. Soeharto

submitted the authority to him based on chapter eight of constitution. Next, Habibie was

forced to stop from his position as the president caused by Timor Timur referendum. His

justification speech was rejected by the People’s Advisory Assembly. Finally, he returned

as a usual Indonesian citizen. He moved to Germany and lived there.
