Instrument Cluster
Refer to Wiring Diagrams Cell 62, Instrument Cluster for schematic and connector information.
Special Tool(s)
Instrument Gauge System Tester
014-R1063 or equivalent
Principles of Operation
Speedometer Gauge
The instrument cluster receives the vehicle speed signal from the powertrain control module (PCM) over the SCP network and displays it on the speedometer gauge. If the instrument
cluster receives no vehicle speed signal after one second, the speedometer defaults to 0.0 km/h (0.0 mph).
Fuel Gauge
The instrument cluster receives the fuel level information directly from the fuel sender. When the instrument cluster fails to receive the fuel level signal for more than 33 seconds, then the
fuel level gauge will move below E (empty). If the fuel level signal then operates correctly for more than 33 seconds, the fuel gauge will return to the correct position.
Fuel fills of less than 22.7 liters (6 gallons) require at least 5-20 minutes to update the fuel gauge indication.
Engine coolant temperature information is received by the instrument cluster from the PCM over the SCP network. Temperatures over 121°C (275°F) will display hot (H). If the engine
coolant temperature data is missing or invalid for five seconds, the instrument cluster will move the engine coolant temperature gauge below the cold (C) position.
The boost pressure gauge on the instrument cluster receives the boost pressure status directly from the intake manifold. The boost pressure gauge will display three conditions: boost
pressure with acceleration, vacuum pressure at idle, or 0 pressure at consistent engine load and rpm.
Odometer
The instrument cluster receives odometer rolling count status from the PCM and stores the mileage in non-volatile memory (NVM). When the instrument cluster fails to receive the odometer
rolling count status for more than two seconds, the odometer display will show dashes.
The low oil pressure indicator on the instrument cluster receives the oil pressure status directly from the oil pressure switch. The two-position oil pressure gauge will display either normal or
no oil pressure. The low oil pressure indicator will prove out when the ignition switch is placed in the START position and then in the RUN position.
The BRAKE indicator will prove out when the ignition switch is placed in the START and then in the RUN position. The BRAKE indicator will also be illuminated when the instrument cluster
receives a ground signal from the parking brake switch or the brake fluid level switch.
The seat belt switch is hardwired to the generic electronic module (GEM) or central timer module (CTM). The safety belt warning indicator will be illuminated when the GEM/CTM sends a
ground signal to the instrument cluster. The safety belt indicator will prove out when the ignition switch is placed in the START position and then in the RUN position.
The ABS indicator will be illuminated when the anti-lock brake control module sends an open signal to the instrument cluster. The prove out of the ABS indicator is controlled by the anti-lock
brake control module.
After the engine is started, the SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator will prove out for a duration of three seconds. If the instrument cluster does not receive a message from the PCM within
five seconds, the instrument cluster will send two messages to the PCM and attempt to reestablish communication. If the instrument cluster is unable to establish communication, the
instrument cluster will illuminate the SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator and log a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
The high beam indicator will illuminate when the multifunction switch is in the high beam position and sends a battery signal to the instrument cluster.
The right and left turn indicators will illuminate when the multifunction switch is in either turn signal position or hazard lamps position and sends a battery signal to the instrument cluster.
The air bag indicator will be illuminated when the restraint control module (RCM) sends a ground signal to the instrument cluster. The prove out of the air bag indicator is controlled by the
RCM.
Anti-Theft Indicator
The THEFT indicator provides passive anti-theft system (PATS) prove out. The THEFT indicator will prove out for three seconds following the ignition switch cycle and will flash following the
ignition OFF to indicate that PATS is active.
The charging system indicator will be illuminated when the generator sends a ground signal to the instrument cluster.
Speed Control
The speed control (CRUISE) indicator is controlled by the speed control servo and hardwired to the instrument cluster.
The 4X4 high indicator will be illuminated when the vehicle is in 4X4 high mode and the GEM sends a ground signal to the instrument cluster. The 4X4 high indicator will prove out when the
ignition switch is placed in the START position and then in the RUN position.
The LOW RANGE indicator will be illuminated when the vehicle is in 4X4 low and the PCM sends a message to the instrument cluster via the SCP network. The low range indicator will
prove out when the ignition switch is placed in the START position and then in the RUN position.
The door ajar indicator will prove out when the ignition switch is placed in the START position and then in the RUN position. The door ajar indicator will be illuminated when the CTM/GEM
provides a ground signal to the instrument cluster.
The low fuel indicator will prove out when the ignition switch is placed in the START position and then in the RUN position. The low fuel indicator will illuminate when the fuel level gets low.
The instrument cluster receives the fuel level information directly from the fuel sender.
1. Verify the customer concern by operating the instrument cluster to duplicate the condition. Observe the indicators, warning displays, and gauges to determine if they are operating
correctly with the ignition switch:
4. If the cause of the fault is not visually evident, proceed to the diagnostic tool diagnostics.
1. If the concern remains after the inspection, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from
the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
Check that the program card is correctly installed.
Check the connections to the vehicle.
Check the ignition switch position.
2. If the diagnostic tool still does not power up, refer to the diagnostic tool manual.
3. Carry out the diagnostic tool data link test. If the diagnostic tool responds with:
SCP or ISO = all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to Section 418-00.
No response/not equipped for hybrid electronic cluster (HEC), GO to Pinpoint Test A.
No response/not equipped for generic electronic module/central timer module (GEM/CTM), GO to Pinpoint Test B.
System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs and carry out self-test diagnostics for the HEC, and
GEM/CTM.
4. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Hybrid Electronic Cluster (HEC) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index, or the Generic Electronic Module (GEM)/Central
Timer Module (CTM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics.
5. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, proceed to the HEC Dealer Test Mode to continue diagnostics.
NOTE: The instrument cluster parameters must be reset upon installation of a new instrument cluster.
NOTE: Both passive anti-theft system (PATS) keys are needed to carry out this procedure.
To reset the instrument cluster parameters and program the keys, complete the following procedure:
3. Select ENTER SECURITY ACCESS. Wait 10 minutes for security access to be granted.
10. Place the key in the OFF position (the programming sequence is complete).
NOTE: If the vehicle fails to start following completion of the parameter reset and key programming sequence, clear the keep alive memory (KAM) by disconnecting the battery for five
minutes. For additional information about the battery disconnect procedure, refer to Section 414-00.
To enter the HEC Dealer Test Mode, depress and hold the instrument cluster SELECT/RESET button and then turn the ignition switch to the RUN position. Continue pressing the
SELECT/RESET button (five seconds) until tESt is displayed in the odometer. The SELECT/RESET button must be released within three seconds of the odometer displaying tESt to begin
the dealer test mode. Depress the SELECT/RESET button to advance through the following steps until dtc is displayed. Depressing the SELECT/RESET button will display any continuous
DTCs stored before proceeding to the next step.
