Introduction to MIS:
MIS is short for Management Information System
Management information system, or MIS, broadly refers to a computer-based
system that provides managers with the tools to organize, evaluate and
efficiently manage departments within an organization.
In order to provide past, present and prediction information, a management
information system can include software that helps in decision making, data
resources such as databases, the hardware resources of a system, decision
support systems, people management and project management applications,
and any computerized processes that enable the department to run efficiently.

Important roles of the MIS:

 MIS satisfies the diverse needs through a variety of systems such as
Query System, Analysis System, Modelling System and Decision Support
System.
 It helps in strategic planning, management control, operational control
and transaction processing.
 It helps in the clerical transaction processing.
 It answers the queries on the data pertaining to the transaction, the
status of a record and reference on a variety of documents.
 MIS for Junior Management: Providing the operational data for planning,
scheduling and control, and helps them further in decision-making at the
operation level to correct an out of control situation.
 MIS for Middle Management: In short-term planning, target setting and
controlling the business functions which is supported using the
management tools of planning and control.
 MIS for Top- Level Management: in goal setting, strategic planning and
evolving the business plans and their implementation.
 It plays the role of information generation, communication, problem
identification and helps in the process of decision-making.
In conclusion, organizations today just cannot survive and grow without
properly planned, implemented and maintained MIS.

Why do we need MIS:

 Employees in the same organization are able to easily access the
required information for the day to day operations.
 Management information system make it possible by giving relevant
information to decision makers to arrive at a decision.
 Management information systems record all business transactions of a
company and provide a reference point for the transactions.
 Short Message Service (SMS) & Email makes it possible to communicate
with customers and suppliers from within the MIS system that an
organization is using.

Real time issues:

 Frequently changing customer expectations
 Dynamic job allocation
 Transaction cost
 Market forecast
 Data consolidation and lack of automation
 Competitor management
 Increasing customer base
 Technology skill upgrade

SCOPE OF MIS:
• To provide a variety of reports and displays to management
• To provide managerial end users with information products that supports
much of their day to day decision making needs
• To provide information on the contents of the information products specified
in advance by managers
• To obtain data about the business environment from external sources to
process them to serve the managers in a better way

Netflix and its Management Information Systems:

 The company we have talked about in class is Netflix. We have read and
analysed their SWOT’s during different stages in their development,
examined the growth of their stock and discussed internal and external
events that had major impacts on its emergence.
 We also talked about how the emergence of Netflix and the online
streaming industry has essentially killed the video rental industry.
 Blockbuster, the company that used to be so successful is finally giving
up, as the few still existing stores in the United States are shutting down,
while Netflix continues to grow.
 One of the main reasons why I think Netflix has become so successful
and will continue to be successful in the future is because of its
management information systems.
 As discussed in class, management information systems help companies
make decisions.
 One aspect of this is customer relationship management.
 Netflix uses management information systems to make their platform
more personalized for their users.
 Netflix uses management information systems to capture data about
their users (based on what they have previously watched) and then uses
this data to recommend shows and movies they think their users will be
interested in.
 This makes their users feel more welcomed on the platform, which in
turn prevents them from using different alternatives like Amazon Prime
Video or Hulu.
 The information systems that Netflix uses to run their business are
proprietary software – in other words, most of its technology was built
in-house. Since Netflix technology was built in-house, the company can
be private about sharing the exact details about how exactly their
technology works. The essential systems that Netflix uses are the
following: supply chain management systems and customer
relationships management systems.
