CHAPTER 5

Methods and Techniques of Data Selection

A. Chapter Riviews
This chapter deliberately discusses a variety of data that can be used in quantitative and
qualitative research. In this chapter we will explain what is meant by the data in a research, types of
data and how to get data. It also describes a valid data so that the data used in a research is precise and
accurate.
A glimpse the discussion in this chapter is quite short and not too many descriptions of experts,
Only excerpts from other books and explanations or descriptions are generally based on the
comprehension and conclusion of the author of this book.
In the discussions in this chapter there are some examples of cases that we are easy to describe
as what the author means. There are also explanations from the experts and the general description.

B. Chapter Contents
1. Selection of Data (samples) Research
In this points are discussed data sources that can be used in a quantitative and qualitative
research. As a researcher are required to properly understand the data (samples) that will be used so
that the data is really precise and accurate. And can determine target of the population that will be the
subject of research in accordance with the phenomenon research and how to get the solution in a
research.
- Population, definitions from Mauludi, population is the set of an individual or object that is
becoming a conversation material or research material. So, the population is not just people
but also objects and other natural objects.
- Sample or data will not exist if the population does not exist.
- The sample selection procedure in this chapter includes several phases : population
determination, determination of sample research unit, determination of the sample
selection framework, determination of design sample, determination of sample quantities
and sample selection.

2. Techniques Sampling of Probability and Non probability Sample

- Probability sampling, in this point are outlined of probability various approaches that are
used for sampling, i.e. : simple random samples, proportionate stratified random sampling,
disproportionate stratified random sampling, and area sampling.
- Non probability sampling, In this point are outlined many way to get non probability
sampling, This technique is a sampling technique determined by researchers based on
certain considerations. Several ways of sampling i.e. : puposive sampling, snowball

sampling, quota sampling, convenience sampling, and sistematic sampling.

3. Determination of Sample Size

This point are briefly explain relation to the determination of the sample size, Also presented an
example case using one of the probability sampling techniques.

4. Data Source
In this point is explained clearly enough about the types and sources of data based on the type
of research used. i.e. :
- Types and Data Sources
a. Based on Research Type
- Quantitative data which also mean data in the form of numbers. Two type of data
quantitative i.e. : 1). Discrete data, data obtained by calculating or the impossibly
nominal data in the form of fractional numbers. 2). Data continuum, data obtained from
the results of the measurement and consists of interval data, ordinal and ratios.
- Qualitative data i.e. data in the form of sentences, words or images. Based on the source
is divided into two i.e. primary data and secondary data. The source of this data can be
obtained from observation, interviews, experiments and documents or collecting
documents related to research issues.
In the research point of secondary data explained that to get the secondary data in a research
can not be recklessly. Therefore, at this point it is mentioned the characteristic and secondary data
types so that we do not incorrectly use the method in obtaining the secondary data.
